Lucas’s eyes narrowed, a cold gleam flashing through them. “Let them watch all they want. Rats like them don’t know when to quit.”
Andrew had a good idea of who was behind the tail.
Lucas looked up toward Sloane’s apartment building. “Tell them–no one not personally authorized is allowed near Ms. Sloane.”
“Yes, sir,” Andrew replied immediately.
Lucas leaned back in his seat and said calmly, “Let’s go.”
Their car pulled away slowly. The one that had been following them didn’t give chase–it turned around and went back the way it came.
“Mr. Larry,” the lead on the tracking team reported with his head lowered, “Lucas dropped Ms. Sloane off at her apartment and left right after.”
Larry sat in a wide leather seat, face so dark it looked like it could rain. His fingers tapped rhythmically on the armrest as he asked coldly, “What did they talk about? How long were they downstairs?”
The team leader flinched and quickly answered, “We couldn’t hear them clearly–the distance was too far…” Noticing the shift in Larry’s mood, he hastily added, “But Ms. Sloane got out of the car right away. They only exchanged a few words–looked like a normal goodbye…”
The air in the room seemed to thaw slightly. The man pressed on. “So, based on what we observed, it seems like Lucas and Ms. Sloane don’t have a particularly close relationship, just like the rumors say.”
“Oh?” Larry seemed intrigued. “And what exactly are people saying?”
The man raised his head just a little and answered cautiously, “The word is that Lucas and Sloane’s engagement is just a move by the Hawthorne family–a stopgap. Now that he’s recovered, they’re just waiting for the right time to end things.”
Larry’s face darkened instantly. He slammed his hand down on the table, sending a delicate ornament flying. It hit the floor with a loud crack, shattering into pieces.
“The Rivers family–those idiots. They actually let her marry a dying man back then? They all deserve to die!” His body shook with rage, eyes burning with fury as if he were ready to burn the entire Rivers family to ashes.

The captain glanced nervously at the shattered ornament and was secretly relieved that he wasn’t the one Larry chose to vent his fury on.
Larry’s expression turned cruel. He clenched his jaw and said coldly, “Dig up everything about Sloane’s life–from the moment she was born until now. And anyone who ever wronged her… I want their names.”
“Yes, Mr. Larry!” The man dared not delay and rushed out immediately to gather a team and begin the investigation.
“Sloane, don’t worry,” Larry muttered, clenching his fists so hard his knuckles turned white. “Anyone who ever hurt you–I’ll deal with every single one of them.”
He paused, voice lowering. “It’s just… you don’t seem to remember me anymore…”
Meanwhile, Sloane was preparing for that evening’s auction when her phone rang. It was Mr. Samson.
“Sloane, Harry and the others just sold an AI patent. They said you were involved and want to give you a share.”
Sloane frowned. “Harry? I don’t even know who that is. I’ve never worked on any AI project- you must be mistaken.”
Mr. Samson explained the situation in detail, and only then did Sloane realize—he was talking about those seniors who had cornered her the other day. All she’d done was casually offer a suggestion; that hardly counted as participation. She immediately refused. “I don’t want it. I wasn’t part of the project.”
Mr. Samson hadn’t expected her to be so firm. “Then what should I do? They’ve already given me the money to pass on to you.”
