“That’s right, we absolutely cannot bow to such forces.” Another man stood, his tone righteous

and firm.

The reporters had already had their equipment confiscated; after being locked up all night, every one of them was seething with resentment.

Just then, the conference room door swung open. A middle-aged man in a charcoal-gray suit walked in slowly, four uniformed staff following close behind.

“Mr. Rick?” One of the reporters recognized him at once-Miles’ right-hand man, Rick. Their voice faltered instantly.

Rick’s gaze swept across the room before finally landing on the loudest reporter. “I looked into the matter, so I could only trouble you all to wait here a while.” His voice was calm, deliberate; yet the room fell into dead silence.

“According to the law, spreading false information can carry a sentence of up to seven years in prison.” Rick pulled out a document. “Here is all the footage you shot last night. Our technical department has already examined it-every file is suspected of violating others’ privacy rights.”

The bespectacled reporter’s face went ghostly pale. “We… we’re legitimate media…”

“Really?” Rick let out a cold laugh, then produced another set of papers. “Then perhaps you’d like to explain where this half a million came from?”

The documents showed a massive transfer they’d received a week earlier, all from the same

account.

Confronted with such evidence, the reporters looked utterly crushed.

“Now, sign this nondisclosure agreement.” Miles tossed a file onto the table. “Or I’ll personally escort you to the police station for a quick talk.”

An hour later, when the reporters were finally released from the hotel, each one received an industry notice on their phones: “After verification, the following media professionals have committed serious breaches of professional ethics. Effective immediately, they are blacklisted from the industry…”

At that very moment, Ginnie finally heard her door unlock. Waiting outside were two uniformed officers.

Without expression, one officer produced an arrest warrant, his voice icy. “Ginnie, you are under arrest for inciting others to violate citizens’ privacy and for spreading false information.

“No! Impossible!” Ginnie shook her head frantically, fear and panic flashing in her eyes. She tried to bolt for the door but was swiftly restrained; cold metal cuffs snapped around her

wrists.

Even as they escorted her out of the hotel room, she shrieked at the top of her lungs. “You can’t arrest me! I didn’t do anything!”

But all that answered her were cold stares and the echo of footsteps down the corridor.

Meanwhile, Lucas sat in a hospital room, recounting the incident to Sloane.

“It was my mistake, I never thought she’d stoop to using a child,” he admitted.

Sloane leaned against the headboard, brows drawn tight. “But the scent I caught didn’t seem like a sedative. Where did Ginnie even get it?”

“I’ll have my people look into it thoroughly.” Lucas poured a glass of warm water and placed it in her hand, his voice gentle. “The scene is already secured. Once you’re feeling better, I’ll go with you to see if we can find any clues.”

“Alright.” Sloane gave a small nod.

As for why she hadn’t asked how Lucas planned to deal with Ginnie-she had to admit, she was afraid to know the answer.
