Those two words made Larry freeze for a moment. He curled his lips into a faint, mocking smile. “I did it for Sloane, not for you.”
Lucas ignored the jab. He gave Larry a long, deep look before striding out.
The moment the door closed, the smile slipped from Larry’s face. He lowered his gaze to his bandaged hand and let out a self-mocking laugh. Larry had always been someone who would do anything to achieve his goals; yet for Sloane…
“I must be insane,” he muttered, eyes drifting to the sycamore tree outside the window. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting mottled shadows across his face.
The nurse spoke tentatively. “Mr. Larry, should I-”
“Leave.” Larry’s voice was quiet, yet it allowed no argument.
Only when the room was empty did he allow himself a flicker of weariness. He thought of the panic in Sloane’s eyes that day; thought of the glass he had smashed against his own temple without hesitation. He could have taken advantage of her vulnerability, but instead, he had chosen to hurt himself to protect her.
“Lucas, you’d better not let her down,” he whispered into the stillness, then closed his eyes, burying every forbidden emotion in the shadows cast by his lashes.
Lucas strode quickly down the hospital corridor, the sharp click of his shoes ringing against the marble floor. Pulling out his phone, he dialed Andrew. “I want every rumor Ginnie spread tracked down. Give me a plan for a public clarification within the hour.”
The moment he pushed open Sloane’s door, his steps softened instinctively. She was sitting up in bed reading, but at the sound of the door, she turned her head toward him.
“Already up?” Lucas sat down at her bedside.
Sloane sensed something different in him, though she couldn’t put her finger on what it was. She only said softly, “I got enough rest. How’s Larry?”
Lucas’ gaze shifted almost imperceptibly. Without betraying any emotion, he rose to pour her some water. “He’s recovering well. The doctor said it’s nothing serious; he should be discharged in a few days.”
Relief washed over Sloane at his words, though her eyes drifted unconsciously to the window. “He only did it to save me…”

That night, they had both been drugged; if Larry hadn’t fought to stay conscious, the outcome would have been disastrous.
Lucas knew it too, which was why he felt grateful to Larry.
He watched as Sloane took a few slow sips of water, then reached out naturally to take the glass from her hand.
Setting it down on the nightstand, Lucas spoke with a calmness that made it sound as ordinary as discussing the weather. “The Lyle Group announced this morning that the younger daughter, Cora, has taken over as CEO.”
Sloane’s head snapped up, her bright eyes widening slightly. “Cora?”
Cora was Ginnie’s younger sister. Because Ginnie’s brilliance was so blinding, Cora seemed all the more ordinary by comparison. In Stonebridge, the name Lyle family instantly brought only one person to mind-Ginnie.
“I remember she studied art history,” Sloane recalled. “Didn’t she hold an exhibition in Belerath last year?”
Lucas’ lips curved faintly as he pulled up a file on his phone. “She’s much more than an art enthusiast.”
On the screen was Cora’s recent record-graduate of Belerath’s prestigious university, where she had spearheaded several investment projects with staggering returns. Most striking of all was her quiet acquisition, just last year, of seven percent of Lyle Group’s dispersed shares.
