“They’re celebrating too soon.” Lucas still looked composed, as though everything remained firmly in his control.
“It worked!”
Lucas was in the middle of a high-level board meeting when Conor’s call came through.
“Lucas! Sloane’s experiment was a success!” Conor’s voice boomed with excitement. “That girl’s incredible -the new drug she developed just shattered international records!”
Inside the conference room, every executive watched as their usually unshakable Mr. Hawthorne shot to his feet, scattering documents across the floor without a second glance.
“Where is she now?” His voice carried an urgency he couldn’t disguise.
“She just stepped out of the lab-” Conor’s words cut off as the line went dead.
Half an hour later, Lucas’ Maybach screeched to a stop at the gates of the military research institute. But the guard standing tall at the entrance reported solemnly, “Mr. Hawthorne, Dr. Rivers left half an hour ago.”
At that, Lucas let out a low, sudden laugh. So, she’s avoiding me.
His long fingers brushed across the corner of his lips, as if still feeling the faint warmth of hers. He suddenly remembered that fleeting moment when she had run, the soft strands of her hair sweeping across his cheek, leaving behind the delicate scent of gardenia. Sloane, do you really think you can escape me?
Meanwhile-
“Sloane? What are you doing here?” Jill looked at her in surprise.
Sloane smiled. “Didn’t you say I was welcome anytime? So I thought I’d stay at your place for a few days.”
The moment she heard that, Jill’s eyes lit up. She grabbed Sloane’s hand and tugged her inside. “Perfect! I’ll have the kitchen make all your favorite dishes!”
As she ordered the staff to prepare a guest room, she excitedly phoned her family, “Grandpa! Sloane’s here visiting us!”
Within ten minutes, the Besnard residence was buzzing with life. Brian came out himself, leaning on a cane to greet her. “Ah, Sloane, you finally camel That prescription you gave me last time-it’s worked wonders for my old joints,”
Jill’s aunt arrived carrying a tray/of freshly made pastries. “Dr. Rivers, try these osmanthus cakes I just learned to make. I heard they’re your favorite…”
In the middle of the cheerful chatter, the butler hurried in. “Sir, Mr. Hawthorne has arrived. He says… he’s here to pay his respects.”

Lucas stepped in wearing a perfectly tailored suit. The moment he entered the Besnard family’s parlor, his gaze locked onto her. After a month apart, she looked a little thinner, but those bright eyes of hers still struck something deep inside him.
He carried two boxes of fine tea, presenting them respectfully to Brian. “Mr. Brian, I heard you’ve developed a taste for green tea lately. I brought some rare leaves from a small.”
Brian’s smile crinkled his eyes. “How thoughtful of you, Lucas. You came at just the right time-sit, have tea with us.”
Lucas settled naturally into the seat beside Sloane and began preparing the tea. His long fingers traced the edge of the teaware; fragrant steam curled in the air between them. Without a word, he slid a cup toward her, his fingertips grazing the back of her hand almost imperceptibly.
“Careful, it’s hot,” he murmured, his voice rough in a way only she would catch.
Sloane’s fingers trembled ever so slightly, but she forced herself to appear calm as she lifted the cup. “Since when has Mr. Hawthorne become so well-versed in the art of tea?”
