Sloane had only been living peacefully with the Hawthorne family for a few days before the Rivers family once again stirred up trouble.

Samantha appeared before the cameras, carefully made up yet crying prettily, her tears glistening like raindrops on blossoms. “Ever since that incident at home, my sister has refused to see us…. our parents think about her every day…”

She dabbed at her eyes, then played a carefully edited video for the audience. “Every year on her birthday, our whole family stays up late, waiting to celebrate with her… but she won’t even pick up the phone…”

The live chat scrolled wildly, and the audience in the studio sighed and muttered in sympathy.

“So now that the family’s bankrupt, she just turns her back on them? How heartless.”

“Her parents treated her so well-she’s ungrateful beyond belief.”

“Gets rich and pretends she doesn’t know her own family?”

“My sister wasn’t like this before…” Samantha’s voice trembled as she wiped away fresh tears. “I don’t know who’s been poisoning her against us; someone must have misled her into thinking she can’t acknowledge us anymore…”

The camera then cut to Marshall. His hair was half white now, his body frail and stooped; the sight drew an outpouring of pity. He bowed deeply toward the camera. “Sloane, your father knows he was wrong. As long as you’ll come home, I’ll agree to anything you want…”

With shaking hands, he pulled a worn photograph from his pocket. “This is your childhood photo; I’ve carried it with me all these years…”

The comments grew harsher, feeding the frenzy.

“My God, look at that poor old man.”

“Sloane is ruthless.”

“Blood is thicker than water-just go home already.”

Then the director abruptly switched the screen to show: 36 missed calls.

“Our production team has tried contacting Ms. Rivers…” The host trailed off, his tone loaded with implication.

The insults in the chat grew uglier by the second.

“She’s guilty; that’s why she won’t pick up.”

“A daughter like that isn’t worth raising.”

“So what if she’s Dr. Rivers now? Does that make her better than her family?”

Meanwhile, in the Hawthorne residence, Sloane’s phone buzzed incessantly with messages. Lucas glanced

at the screen; curses and abuse flooded in.

“Unfilial daughter, just die!”

“Do you even deserve to be called their child?”

“What the heck is Lucas doing with trash like you?”

Lucas’ fingers clenched so tightly around the phone it seemed it might shatter; his eyes churned with a storm of rage. “I’ll make the Rivers family pay.”

“Wait.” Sloane gently pressed down on his hand, her lips curving into a faint, meaningful smile. “All this effort-don’t you see? They just want to force me back to the Rivers family.”

Lucas’ brow furrowed. “What are you saying?”

“If they’re so desperate for me to return…” Sloane smoothed her sleeve with unhurried grace, a glint of cold determination flashing in her eyes. “Then I’ll give them exactly what they want.”

Lucas gripped her hand in alarm. “You want to take that risk again?”

Sloane laced her fingers through his. “You can’t catch a tiger’s cub without stepping into its den.”

She was desperate to uncover the truth about her biological parents; and the person behind Samantha might be the only lead she had. She couldn’t afford to let it slip away.

“I promise, I’ll take good care of myself.” Sloane’s voice softened as she soothed him. “If it gets too dangerous, I’ll pull out immediately.”

Lucas knew there was no stopping her. He tightened his hold on her hand. “I’ll speak with Conor; we’ll come up with a strategy. No matter what, your safety comes first.”

Conor wanted to dismantle the overseas black-market medical chain; Sloane wanted to use Samantha’s backer to trace her birth parents. In truth, their goals aligned. Since Sloane was willing to step into the game, careful planning was the only way forward.
