Marshall hurried to speak. “As long as you agree, we’ll still be one family. You’ll be treated the same as Sammy; you’re both my precious daughters.”

Samantha chimed in quickly. “That’s right. Sloane, haven’t you always longed for family?”

Sloane looked at them, still trying to coax her as if she were a child. Clearly, they still thought she was that naïve little girl from eight years ago.

How laughable. She sneered inwardly before answering slowly, “But that’s not what I want now.”

Marshall’s eyes sharpened. “Then what do you want?”

Sloane crossed her legs with practiced elegance; her fingertips tapped lightly against the sofa armrest. “I want fifty percent of Su Group’s decision-making power.”

“What?” Samantha shot to her feet, her delicate features twisting. “That’s impossible!”

Marshall’s face shifted between light and dark as he tested her. “Sloane, are you serious?”

“Of course.” Sloane smiled faintly. “If this is to be a partnership, you need to show some sincerity.” Her gaze drifted deliberately toward Samantha. “You can’t expect to get something for nothing.”

Adrian frowned, stepping in. “Fifty percent is too much; the company right now-”

“Adrian.” Sloane cut him off, her eyes sharp. “How much do you think I’m worth?” She stroked the bracelet around her wrist. “After all, I’m Dr. Rivers now.”

A flash of calculation flickered in Marshall’s eyes, but hesitation quickly followed. He needed Sloane’s medical skills and connections; but giving up half the power…

“Dad!” Samantha stomped her foot in frustration. “You promised me!”

Sloane watched the father and daughter quarrel, then rose gracefully to her feet. “Seems you haven’t made up your minds yet.” She picked up her purse. “That’s fine. Take your time. I’ll go back to my room to rest.”

“Wait!” Marshall rushed to stop her. “Let’s discuss this more-”

“It’s not a discussion.” Sloane turned at the foot of the stairs, her gaze cold as ice. “Fifty percent. Not a fraction less. When you’ve come around…” Her eyes lingered meaningfully on Helen, still cowering in the corner. “…then we’ll continue.”

With that, she walked upstairs without a backward glance. Behind her came Samantha’s hysterical shrieks and the shattering of porcelain.

Back in her room, Sloane closed the door softly, the corner of her mouth curving into a cold smile. She scanned the space-this so-called “room prepared for her” reeked of perfunctory effort. The bedsheets were still the same old set; a thin layer of dust coated the vanity; even the window only opened halfway.

She removed the earring from her lobe, twisting it lightly to reveal the tiny listening device inside. From downstairs, the Rivers family’s voices came through, clear as day.

“Dad! Are you insane? You’re really going to give her half the company shares?” Samantha’s voice was sharp and grating.

“You don’t understand!” Marshall snarled in a low growl. “That man made it clear-once we secure that project, we can use the chance to secretly steal Sloane’s medical techniques; then we’ll kick her aside. After that, we’ll have everything we could ever want!”

“But-”

“Shut up!” Marshall cut her off. “Do you think I want this? For now, we just have to placate her long enough to sign the contract. Once you’ve learned everything she knows…”

A flash of cold light flickered in Sloane’s eyes. Just as I thought.

She slipped off the earring and pulled a small embroidered sachet from her bag, hanging it on the bedpost. Inside were carefully prepared herbs.
