Her gaze swept across the crowd and finally settled on Sloane. “Or… you could take Mom’s place as the hostage, Sloane.”

Sloane recalled the message she had just received; without hesitation, she stepped forward. “Fine. Let her go, and I’ll go with you.”

“You agreed?” Samantha eyed her with suspicion.

Even Helen, who was at the center of it all, was stunned; she couldn’t understand why Sloane would be willing to trade herself.

“I agreed,” Sloane said, taking another step forward.

“Stop, don’t move!” Samantha held Helen tightly, her eyes fixed warily on Sloane. She tossed a pill toward her. “Swallow it, and I’ll let her go.”

Sloane caught the pill and, to the shock of everyone watching, swallowed it in one gulp. The drug worked fast; her legs buckled, and she nearly collapsed. Samantha shoved Helen aside at once and yanked Sloane into her grasp.

“Open the car door!” she barked.

The soldiers had no choice but to clear a path. Dragging the weakened Sloane, Samantha climbed into the waiting SUV and slammed her foot on the gas, tearing through the Rivers family gates.

She headed straight for the docks, where she had already prepared an escape route.

Sloane slumped in the passenger seat, knowing the drug was taking effect.

Once they reached the docks, Samantha hauled Sloane out of the car and dragged her onto a boat.

Lucas and Conor arrived with a team of officers, only to be met with a chilling sight-

Samantha stood on the speedboat deck, one hand clamped around Sloane’s throat, the other holding the glowing blue vial high in the air. The moonlight cast her scarred face into a grotesque mask.

“Don’t come any closer!” she shrieked with a manic laugh. “Or I’ll let her taste this right now!”

Lucas’ eyes blazed. “Samantha! If you so much as touch a hair on her head, I’ll make sure you beg for death!”

“Well, Mr. Hawthorne, what a big threat,” Samantha mocked, mimicking Lucas’ tone. Suddenly, she yanked Sloane’s hair viciously. “And what if I do? What can you possibly do to me?”

Sloane let out a muffled groan of pain, her face pale. She lifted her head weakly and gave Lucas the faintest shake, signaling him not to act rashly.

“Look at you, how protective you are.” Samantha laughed with twisted glee, dragging her nails across Sloane’s cheek and leaving a bleeding scratch. “Your precious woman is in my hands now.”

Conor held back the nearly explosive Lucas and said in a low, steady voice, “Samantha, what do you

want?”

Staring at Sloane in her grasp, Samantha raised her voice. “Let me leave. Once I’m somewhere safe, I’ll release her.”

“Let her go,” Conor suddenly ordered, raising his hand to signal the team to fall back.

“No!” Lucas snapped, whipping his head toward him.

“Follow the order.” Conor’s tone was calm, but his eyes flicked toward Sloane with a meaningful weight.

Samantha froze for a moment, then burst into wild laughter. “At least you know your place!” She roughly dragged Sloane toward the speedboat’s controls, starting the engine with one hand.

“Sloane!” Lucas tried to charge forward, but the officers held him back.

The boat slowly pulled away from the dock. Weak and dazed, Sloane leaned against the rail; she cast one last glance back at Lucas.

“Why did you let her go?” Lucas roared, grabbing Conor by the collar.

Conor lowered his voice. “It’s Sloane’s plan. The head of the foreign organization is still at large; she let herself be taken so we can track them back to their stronghold.”
