Footsteps sounded outside the door. Sloane quickly pulled out the needle. By the time the maid reentered, she appeared weak, leaning against the headboard; inside the crystal bottle on the vanity, a few bloodstained rose petals had quietly sunk to the bottom.

Late into the night, Sloane’s eyes suddenly snapped open.

She pieced together the fragments of information she had overheard from the woman.

She was madly in love with a man named Tony; she was equally consumed with hatred for an extraordinary woman named Beth.

The very first time they had met, that woman had said Sloane resembled her.

So Sloane dared to guess that the Beth she despised might well be her own mother.

And Tony-he might be her father.

Her mind quickly filled in the rest, Tony and Beth had once been lovers, while the masked woman, twisted by jealousy, had used every means possible to replace Beth.

She needed a way to confirm it.

Sloane’s fingers absently rubbed against the needle, a sharp glint flashing through her eyes.

The woman came again to smear medicine onto her skin. She was unusually excited that day; her fingertips, coated with pale golden ointment, traced slow circles across Sloane’s cheek while she hummed an off-key tune.

“Do you know?” the woman suddenly said, her voice cloyingly sweet, dripping like honey. “Tony loves this scent… he always said Beth carried a cool, delicate fragrance…”

Sloane kept her eyes shut, letting the woman do as she pleased; yet in the moment when the woman was most relaxed, she spoke abruptly-

“You will never replace my mother Beth in Tony’s heart.”

The air froze.

The woman’s hand jerked violently; her nails dug deep into Sloane’s skin.

Smack!

The slap cracked across Sloane’s face, so forceful her head whipped to the side; blood welled at the corner

of her mouth.

“Shut up!” The woman’s voice was shrill, her eyes glowing crimson beneath the mask. “Beth is nothing! A wretch who lived off her family’s power! She should have died long ago!”

Sloane licked the blood from her lip, then lifted her gaze to meet hers; her eyes were calm, almost taunting. “Yet she’s alive-living happily.”

The woman’s breathing grew ragged, her chest rising and falling violently; clearly the words had struck a

nerve.

Then she burst into a fit of manic laughter. Clutching Sloane’s hair, she yanked her head back, forcing her to meet her gaze. “I might as well tell you-Beth will soon face ruin. Once the Shen family goes bankrupt and no one can protect her, I’ll drag her back here… let you reunite with your dear mother.”

Sloane’s heart sank, but her face remained impassive. “They belong to each other’s hearts; you’ll never have a place in Tony’s.”

The woman let go, stepping back; her laughter rang with madness. “Soon… I’ll have your face, your skin… Tony will look at me, touch me, love me… and Beth will be forced to watch every moment of it!”

She spun on her heel, leaving with hurried, chaotic steps-like someone fleeing in defeat.

The door slammed shut. Sloane let out a slow breath, her fingertips trembling faintly, her parents were still alive, but it seemed they were in trouble.

She had to escape, and soon.

Night lay heavy as ink; the sea wind lashed against the deck, carrying the sharp tang of salt. Lucas stood at the bow of the speedboat, his fingers locked so tightly around the railing it seemed he might crush the metal.
