“Boss has been gone all day… wonder if he managed to get the shipment back.” Snippets of conversation drifted into her cars.

When the footsteps faded, Sloane immediately slipped toward the eastern passage marked on the floor plan she had memorized.

She had barely rounded a corner when she came face-to-face with two patrolling pirates. Her reaction was lightning-fast; the needle plunged into one man’s throat, and as the other reached for his gun, she spun and struck a sharp hand chop to his neck. But as his body collapsed, the butt of his weapon slammed against the metal railing-

Clang!

The sound echoed piercingly through the still night.

Barking and pounding footsteps erupted in the distance.

“Who’s over there?”

Sloane had no choice but to sprint for her life.

She shoved open the back door; the sting of sea wind, heavy with the reek of diesel, hit her face. The pier ahead blazed with light; a few drunken men were unloading cargo.

Keeping to the shadows of stacked containers, she crept along, only to hear the rattle of metal-two armed guards were headed straight toward her hiding place.

She curled herself quickly into a drainage pipe, the jagged edge tearing open her arm. Boots stopped just above her head; static-filled chatter crackled over their radios.

“All units, the woman Boss brought back has escaped. Find her and drag her back here!”

Before the voice even faded, a wailing alarm tore across the island. Sloane’s heart plunged-she had been discovered two hours earlier than she had calculated.

Chaos swept the dock. She seized the moment, rolling beneath a speedboat’s hull; but the tank was already bone-dry. Engines roared in the distance-three patrol boats were sealing off the mouth of the bay.

“Alive or dead, I want her found!” The woman’s hysterical shriek burst over the radios. “Turn this island upside down if you have to!”

With no chance of reaching the sea, Sloane had no choice but to retreat into the sewers.

She remembered studying the terrain when she first arrived; if her guess was right, there should be a cliff to the north.

The darkness was suffocating as she pushed through the narrow passage, recking water rising past her knees; rats scattered from her feet in panicked squeals. Her wounded arm throbbed sharply where the filthy water soaked into the gash, but she didn’t dare stop.

Suddenly, the sound of splashing water echoed aliead. Sloane pressed against the slimy wall, holding her

breath. Two guards, wolfhounds straining at their leashes, were sweeping the tunnel; flashlights wavered across the murky surface.

“This place reeks like hell!” one guard complained. “No way that wench came down here.”

“Shut it. The boss said every inch gets checked.”

Sloane crept backward, but her heel struck a broken steel pipe. The metallic clink rang sharp and clear in the enclosed tunnel.

“What was that?”

The hounds exploded in furious barking. Sloane abandoned all thought of hiding and bolted down a side passage. Behind her came curses and the wild baying of the dogs.

She rounded several bends before spotting a rusted manhole cover overhead. Bracing herself, she shoved with all her strength; her wet hands kept slipping on the edges. Just as the hounds lunged close, she heaved herself through and slammed the cover down behind her.

The dogs clawed and barked frantically against the iron.

Sloane collapsed onto the grass, gulping for air-only then realizing she had stumbled into the garden behind her quarters. The pale-blue sky still held a few fading stars; dawn was breaking.
