The raider chief spat a mouthful of blood and sneered, “Little girl, you really think a few needles will scare me?”
Sloane’s gaze went ice–cold; the needle in her hand flashed and stabbed into a point on the back of his neck. The chief’s expression froze instantly; his pupils constricted violently.
“This first needle will make every pain nerve in your body ten times more sensitive,” Sloane said, and she produced another needle; “this one will block your motor nerves- you won’t even be able to bite your own tongue to kill yourself.”
The raider chief let out an inhuman scream and curled up like a shrimp. Veins bulged on his forehead; cold sweat poured from him.
“Now,” Sloane crouched down, the third needle wavering before his eyes, “this needle will pierce your point; you will live in the same agony forever, until… you start talking.”
“Wait! I’ll tell you!” the chief collapsed and screamed. “They moved her! This morning the boss got a phone call and then they took her to the Black Desert!”
Marcus and the men watched in stunned silence; the man who had once looked ferocious now cowered like a broken shell of
himself.
Marcus and the others instinctively stepped back a half pace, exchanging horrified looks; Hart swallowed and murmured, “God… we actually treated her like that before…”
The soldier who had mocked Sloane’s skills most loudly went pale; in his heart he swore never to offend an woman again- their needles were something the raiders clearly couldn’t bear.
Sloane withdrew her needles with practiced efficiency and rose; her usual mild manner returned. “Would’ve been nicer if you’d cooperated sooner.” She turned to Lucas, “How far is the Black Desert from here?”
Lucas unfolded the electronic map quickly, brow furrowed; “The Black Desert… it’s at least sixty kilometers from here.”
Marcus’s face changed; “No way! That place is a death zone!” He gestured wildly, agitated;
“Sandstorms, quicksand, extreme temperature swings, and the legendary black sandstorm–it’ll flay you alive!”
The men began to stir; some started whispering among themselves,
“The last scientific team that went in–there were no bodies to be found…”
“I heard compasses go crazy there…”
“I’m not signing up to die…”
Hart looked at Sloane hesitantly; “Dr. Rivers, that place really isn’t somewhere humans should go…”
Shawn jumped to his feet, “If you won’t go, I’ll go alone!” He faced Lucas and Sloane, pleading with his eyes; he wanted to say more but couldn’t find the words…
Lucas and Sloane exchanged a glance; Sloane gave a small nod. Lucas patted Shawn on the shoulder, “We’ll go with you.”
Marcus looked displeased; “Mr. Hawthorne, you don’t know how dangerous that place is…”

“I know,” Lucas cut him off. “The Oliver family hired us to save someone; we accepted- and we haven’t saved her yet.”
A young team member suddenly stepped forward, “Captain… I’ve got a wife and kids at home…”
Soon, more than half the men said they wanted to back out.

Sloane looked up and said, “Those who want to go, each take one Heartfire Capsule and a bottle of Vitalseal Serum.” She pulled several gilded lacquer boxes from a hidden compartment; “A Heartfire Capsule can suspend the heart pulse for seven days, Vitalseal Serum can instantly stop internal bleeding. These two medicines are mixed with merfolk oil and ginseng–just the medicinal carriers are priceless; even on the black market, you couldn’t buy half a pill at any price.”
