Blood trickled from the corner of the man’s mouth, yet he still grinned. “What do you mean, ‘sent‘? I was just passing through. You’ve got the wrong guy.”
“Passing through?” Hart sneered and drove his boot into the man’s knee. “You ‘passed through‘ the middle of the Black Desert and somehow ran straight into us? You think we’re idiots?”
The man grunted in pain, cold sweat beading on his forehead, but he refused to speak.
Shawn crouched down in front of him, locking eyes with the man. His voice was cold and sharp. “The direction you ran wasn’t toward any oasis. You were leading us deeper into the desert–into an ambush, weren’t you?”
The man’s eyes flickered, but he quickly steadied his expression. “Think what you want. I don’t know anything.”
“Still got some fight in you, huh?” Marcus gave a dark chuckle and gestured to the others. “Wake him up a little.”
The team moved in without hesitation. Fists and boots rained down. The man held out at first, gritting his teeth, but it wasn’t long before he broke down, screaming in pain. Finally, he curled on the ground, gasping for air. “Stop! Stop! I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”
Marcus jerked him up by the hair. “Then talk!”
The man coughed up blood, his voice hoarse and trembling. “It… it was the boss. He told me to lure you into the canyon ahead. There’s an ambush waiting there…”
“Who’s your boss?” Lucas demanded coldly.
“Stinger…” the man panted. “He’s working with Charlie…”
“Charlie?” Sloane’s pupils contracted. “He’s here too?”
The man nodded weakly. “Our boss captured two people. Charlie came here because of them…”
Shawn’s face twisted in shock. He grabbed the man by the throat. “Say it clearly! Were they a man and a woman? The woman named Beth, the man Tony?”
The man’s face turned blue as he struggled for breath, but he managed a frantic nod.
Marcus slammed his fist against a rock, fury burning in his voice. “Goddamn it! I knew it–Charlie, that bastard!”
Sloane took a steadying breath, forcing herself to stay calm. “Where are they? How many men are in the canyon?”
“About twenty…” the man rasped. “But Charlie… he’s not there… He’s at the abandoned fortress north of the oasis… That’s where those two are being held…”
Lucas narrowed his eyes. “And how do I know you’re not lying?”
“I–I wouldn’t dare!” the man cried, shaking his head desperately. “I swear it’s true!”
Lucas didn’t look convinced. He glanced toward Sloane.
Sloane pointed at a boulder nearby. “Bring him there,” she said quietly. “I’ll handle the rest.”

Lucas gave a curt nod, grabbed the man by the collar, and dragged him toward the rock.
Shawn leaned closer, curiosity etched on his face. “Dr. Rivers, what are you planning to do?”
Sloane’s lips curved into a faint smile. “I have my own way of making people tell the truth.”
Without another word, she walked over to join Lucas behind the boulder.

The three of them disappeared from view. Shawn and the others strained to listen, but not a single sound came from the other side.
Moments later, Lucas and Sloane emerged–calm, composed. Behind them, the man followed silently. His face was blank, his eyes vacant, his movements stiff and mechanical.
Shawn and Hart exchanged uneasy looks. The once–defiant captive now stood behind Sloane like a puppet, his gaze hollow and lifeless. A cold shiver ran down both their spines.
