Chapter 436 The Trap at Ravoth
Lucas’s face went pale. “We’ve been duped! Retreat–now!”
The four of them were about to turn when a synchronized sound of bolts being drawn came from behind.
“Don’t be in such a hurry to leave.” A mocking voice came from the shadows.
Charlie stepped forward slowly. A dozen or so fully armed men followed him, their muzzles all aimed at them.

“Mr. Hawthorne, Dr. Rivers, Mr. Shawn – we meet again.” Charlie inclined his head slightly; his tone was casual, as if greeting old friends.
Sloane’s pupils contracted; understanding flickered across her face. “You did this on purpose?”
Charlie strolled forward at an easy pace, his gaze locking on Sloane. “Exactly. That man was sent out on purpose. I know what you’re capable of, so to make you believe it, he really thought he was carrying out a seduction operation.”
Sloane had used an illusion to control that scout – only to realize the scout had been Charlie’s pawn all along.
Hart ground his teeth and spat a curse under his breath. “Damn it, we’ve been played!”
Anger flared in Shawn’s eyes; his knuckles cracked as he clenched his fists. “Charlie! Where are my aunt and uncle?”
Charlie laughed softly. “Don’t worry. You’ll be reunited with them soon.” He turned to the bandit leader at his side. “Stinger – that side should be taken care of too, right?”
The bandit leader grinned. “Marcus and his lot are all tied up. No one got away.”
In the canyon
Marcus and his men were bound hand and back, lying on the sand while armed bandits surrounded them. The bandit leader, cigarette dangling from his mouth, kicked Marcus’s shoulder. “You lot? You actually thought you could come into our territory?”
Marcus spat a mouthful of blood and sneered. “If you’ve got the guts, fight me one–on–one, you bastard!”
The leader laughed loudly and pressed his gun to Marcus’s forehead. “You’ll have your chance to perform soon.”
Sloane and the others were shoved roughly into the fortress’s subterranean cells and shackled with chains. The heavy iron door slammed shut behind them. Damp air carried the stench of blood and rot; mice in the corners were startled and scurried into the
shadows.
“Stay down!” A guard kicked Shawn in the knee. Shawn grunted, dropping to one knee, but stubbornly kept his chin up.
Charlie entered at a leisurely pace; his polished boots rang on the flagstones. He stopped in front of Sloane and pinched her chin. “Dr. Rivers, I never thought I’d see you brought low like this.”
Sloane turned her face away coldly. “Do what you want – kill me if you must. Spare the theatrics.”
“Kill you?” Charlie burst into sudden laughter that echoed off the stone walls. “That would be too easy.” His eyes went hard and sinister. “When my sister died, she was tortured.”
Lucas strained at his chains. “If you touch her, I swear I’ll make you wish you were dead!”

Charlie sneered at the threat. “Mr. Hawthorne, do you still fancy yourself the head of the all–powerful Hawthorne family in Stonebridge? This is the Black Desert of Ravoth – even a pharaoh’s curse can’t reach here.”
“Hahaha this is my domain,” Charlie crowed, then fixed them with a chilling stare. “I let you live when I want you to live, I let you die when I want you to die.”
Sloane frowned at the mad look in Charlie’s eyes. “What exactly are you planning to do?”
Charlie’s smile faded; he regarded Sloane with a cold, deadly calm. “At sunrise tomorrow, I will use you to resurrect my sister.”
