Chapter 438 The Blood of the Moon

If they were enemies… Beth looked down at the unconscious Tony, the veins standing out on her clenched hand around the knife. At the very least, she’d take one of them down with her.

The shadows moved closer. Beth immediately pushed Tony behind her, her trembling hand gripping the knife tight, its tip aimed straight ahead. “Stop! Take one more step and I swear I’ll cut you down!”

The man in front, Jack, quickly raised both hands. “Don’t be afraid! We were sent by the Oliver family to rescue you!” He lowered his voice, urgent but careful. “Mr. Shawn led a team into the Black Desert to save you. Haven’t you seen him?”

Beth didn’t waver. The knife stayed perfectly still, her eyes cold and guarded. “Prove it.”

Jack hurriedly pulled something from his coat–a silver insignia glinting under the moonlight. “This is Mr. Shawn’s token.” The Oliver family crest shimmered on its surface. “We got separated from him and his group. We were worried they’d run into trouble, so we turned back to find them.”

Beth’s grip loosened slightly, though the knife still hovered between them. “…He came too?”

“Not just Mr. Shawn,” Jack said carefully, stepping forward. “There was also a young doctor- Sloane Rivers. Pretty little thing…” He paused, squinting at Beth in the moonlight. “Actually, that Dr. Rivers girl looks exactly like you.”

“What did you just say?” Beth’s voice trembled. “What girl?”

Jack frowned in confusion. “The young lady who came with Mr. Shawn.”

Beth’s heart clenched. She swallowed hard. “How old… how old is she?”

“Dr. Rivers looks around twenty, maybe a bit older.”

The knife clattered from Beth’s hand. She staggered back two steps, her face drained of color. “Twenty… twenty years old…” Her hand shot out and grabbed Jack’s arm, her nails digging deep into his skin. “Where is she? Where is that girl?”

Startled by her sudden outburst, Jack stammered, “Mr. Shawn took Dr. Rivers and the others into the Black Desert to rescue you and Mr. Tony!”

Beth’s pupils constricted sharply. A memory flashed–when she and Tony had escaped the fortress, she’d heard Charlie laughing madly, shouting to his men, “Bring them all back! Not a single one escapes!”

It had been because most of the guards left to hunt that group that she and Tony had managed to slip away.

“Oh no…” Beth’s face went pale. “It’s a trap!” She turned to the unconscious Tony, her voice breaking. “Miles… Shawn and the others…”

Jack caught her as she nearly collapsed. “Please, don’t panic! We’ll-”

“Take me to them!” Beth cut him off, her eyes blazing with resolve. “Now. Immediately!”

“But your injuries—”

“I’m fine!” She wiped the blood and dirt from her face. “That girl… I need to see her…” Her voice fell, trembling with something raw and strange. “I can feel it… she means something to me…”

Jack exchanged a look with the soldiers behind him, then gave a firm nod. “All right. But we need to secure Mr. Tony first.” He gestured, and two men stepped forward to carefully lift Tony.

Beth took one last look at her husband, then turned away, her eyes filled with fierce determination. “Jack–lead the way.”

Under the cold moonlight, the small group pushed deeper into the Black Desert. Beth’s quickened, her heart pounding as if some invisible force was pulling her forward. She didn’t know who this Dr. Rivers truly was—but she knew she had to find her, no matter what it took… even if it meant uncovering a truth buried for twenty years.
