Urdu’s second–in–command spoke with a low, sinister tone. “They’ve got the CEO of Oliver Group and Mr. Shawn from the same family. If we capture them, the Olivers will pay any price to get them back. We could name whatever we want.”
Urdu hesitated. The idea stirred his greed, but a flicker of caution lingered. “The Oliver family’s reach is global. If we cross them, we’ll be hunted to the ends of the earth.”
Even as he said it, his gaze burned with avarice.
Meanwhile, back at camp, Beth was already giving orders. “Shawn, tell everyone to be ready. We leave at dawn, no delays.”
Sloane immediately picked up on the tension in her voice. “What happened?”
Beth fastened a Desert Eagle at her waist. “We need to be ready. Urdu won’t let us go that easily.”
A cold glint flashed in Lucas’s eyes. “Those greedy bastards–they’ll want to ransom us for something bigger.”
Beth’s tone hardened. “They can try. Let’s see if they have what it takes.”
“Exactly!” Shawn slammed a fist into his palm. “If it comes to a fight, we’ll see who walks away.”
But Sloane frowned. They were deep inside Bloodhound territory and outnumbered more than ten to one. A direct fight would be suicide.
Beth went to discuss strategy with Tony. Despite his lingering distrust of Sloane, even Tony knew they had to get out before Urdu changed his mind.
Forcing himself upright, pale but resolute, Tony said, “That greedy wolf Urdu… I knew he’d go back on his word.”
Beth clenched her fists. For all her confidence earlier, she wasn’t certain of anything now. She didn’t fear death–but she couldn’t afford it, not yet. Not before she knew whether Sloane was truly her daughter. She had to get them out alive.
Just then, a knock came at the door.
“Dr. Rivers,” Beth said, softening instantly at the sight of her. “What is it?”
“They won’t let us take Charlie,” Sloane said grimly. She had tried to retrieve him from where

Beth’s expression darkened. After everything Charlic had done, she refused to leave him behind.
“I’ll deal with Urdu myself,” she said, striding for the door.
“I’m coming with you,” Sloane insisted, following close behind.
Together, they entered Urdu’s tent. The air inside was thick with smoke and heat, and Beth’s face was colder than the desert night outside.
“Chief Urdu,” she said flatly, wasting no time. “According to our agreement, Charlie comes with
us.”
Urdu lounged back in his fur–covered chair, gold teeth glinting in the firelight. “We agreed to lend you men and guns to rescue your people. Nowhere did it say anything about handing over extra baggage.”
“You-” Beth’s fists tightened until her knuckles went white.
Sloane reached out, lightly touching her arm to steady her. Then she stepped forward. “Chief Urdu, what did Charlie offer you?”
Urdu’s eyes narrowed as he studied her. Then he let out a slow, predatory grin. “Clever girl. You’re right—he made me a deal.” He raised three fingers. “Seventy percent of the diamond mine’s shares. Give me that, and he’s yours.”
“Seventy?” Beth gave a short, incredulous laugh. “Why not just ask for the entire mine while you’re at it?”
The air in the tent went razor–sharp, every man on edge.
Sloane quickly stepped between them. “Chief Urdu,” she said calmly, her tone even but firm. “Let’s compromise. Half the mine–fifty percent. That’s fair to both sides.”
