Sloane gave a calm smile. “My previous instructors always asked me to critique problems as I solved them. It’s become a habit.”
X9 had trained her that way for years. Over time, it had simply become second nature.
Mr. Samson, still visibly excited, stood and began pacing across the office. “Sloane, with that level of ability, I see no reason why you can’t skip your freshman core classes. In fact, I’d like to ask you a favor–would you help me create this year’s exam questions? With your grasp of the material, I’m sure you’ll come up with top–tier content.”
Sloane nodded. “Alright. But this’ll be my first time drafting exam questions. If I make mistakes, I hope you’ll forgive me.”
Mr. Samson smiled with pride and waved her concern away. “Don’t worry. I’ll guide you—it’ll be great.”
After leaving his office, Sloane called Lena. “Find me a place to rent near campus. I’m moving out.”
Then, after a pause, she added, “Also, try to arrange a meeting with Madam Shanks. Tell her a story.”
Summer might be head–over–heels, but Shanks Corp definitely wasn’t run by emotion.
The next day, Jill found out about Sloane moving out and nearly burst with envy. “I wish I could move out too! But there’s no way my parents would ever agree.”
She was far more excited about another thing though–today was the welcome ceremony where Samantha and Summer would have to apologize to Sloane in front of everyone. Jill couldn’t stop chattering. “Sloane, I can’t wait to see their faces when they’re forced to grovel. This is gonna be so good!”
Sloane just smiled helplessly, about to respond–when her instincts suddenly flared. A sharp sense of danger made her react before she could think.
She yanked Jill aside.
A massive flowerpot shattered on the ground where Jill had just been standing. Dirt and ceramic fragments flew in all directions.
Jill turned ghost–pale. She stared at the mess, shaken. Then, realizing what had just happened, she looked
up at the balcony and screamed, “What kind of heartless maniac did that?! That

Sloane still held her hand tightly and also looked upward–but there was no one in sight.
“Cameron already ran upstairs,” she said. “Let’s wait for him to check.”
Sure enough, moments later, Cameron came back down, panting and drenched in sweat. “No one was up there. I checked everything. Doors, windows–all locked. No sign of anyone.”
Jill stomped her foot. “No one? So what, a flowerpot that big just flew off in the wind?”
She was seething. “What is wrong with today?! I was nearly hit by a guy on the stairs, almost got drenched with boiling water, and now this?!”
Sloane’s expression sharpened. “Wait–you mean this isn’t the first time today?”
Jill’s eyes welled up. She was clearly shaken, and more than a little angry. “Exactly! This morning when I left the dorms, a janitor was carrying a bucket of boiling water–he almost spilled it all over me. If I hadn’t dodged in time, I’d be in the hospital right now!”
“And during lunch,” Cameron added, his face darkening, “we were heading to the library. A guy came tearing down the stairs and nearly slammed into Jill. I pulled her away at the last second.”
He still looked shaken. “There were over twenty steps. If she’d fallen, she would’ve been seriously hurt.”
“I’m just cursed today,” Jill muttered, trying to laugh it off–but her voice trembled.
Sloane’s expression turned grim. Was this all really just a string of coincidences… or was something far more deliberate at play?
