Quinn, lock her in the attic. No food, no water. I want to see how long she keeps that attitude,Marshall ordered coldly.

Quinn immediately called for a few servants to seize Sloane.

But just as they moved in-

Stand down!

A thunderous voice rang through the house. Everyone turned toward the entrance, startled.

An imposing figure stood in the doorwayMadam Rivers, the matriarch of the main Rivers family branch, upright and sharpeyed despite the cane in her hand. Several grimfaced bodyguards flanked her.

Marshall’s face went pale with shock. He stepped forward instinctively, forcing a smile. Ma’am, what brings you here?

Madam Rivers let out a snort and strode into the room without answering. Her eyes swept over everyone like a bladefinally landing on Sloane, who was still surrounded. For a brief moment, a flicker of emotion passed through her stern gaze.

So, you’re Sloane. You’ve been through a lot, haven’t you?

Marshall’s heart sank. He knew the main family too wellthey never showed up unless something was in it for them. And yet here she was, openly defending Sloane? His eyes darted toward the bodyguards, searching for a clue, but came up empty.

Sloane gave Madam Rivers a brief look of surprise before regaining her composure. She nodded politely. Ma’am.

Madam Rivers reached out and took her hand, her expression suddenly warm and kind. We’re family, aren’t we? No need for ma’amcall me Grandma.”

Sloane smiled with practiced politeness, lips curved but eyes unreadable, Grandma.

Ahh, that’s more like it.Madam Rivers beamed with satisfaction.

The rest of the Rivers family stood frozen in disbelief. Everyone knew the main family looked down on them. At every holiday or family gathering, the old woman barely gave them the time of daycertainly never a smile.

Samantha nearly lost it. She’d tried to curry favor with Madam Rivers in the past, but had always been met with cold indifference. Not once had she received a kind word. And now- seeing Sloane accepted with open arms, spoken to so affectionatelyher nails dug deep into her palms, eyes brimming with poisonous jealousy.

Then Madam Rivers turnedand her smile vanished.

She glared directly at Marshall. This is how you treat your own daughter? You’d lock her up and starve her because of some adopted girl? Do you even have a conscience?

Marshall opened his mouth to explain, but she cut him off immediately.

When you brought Sloane back into this house, I hoped you’d treat her right. And what did you do? You let Samantha ride roughshod over her, act like a queen while she suffered. And now you want to lock her up? No food, no water? Have you completely lost your humanity?

Helen stepped in quickly, trying to salvage the situation. Old Madam, it’s not like that. We didn’t want things to turn out this way, but the Rivers family is on the edge of collapse. It’s just a small favor, something so easy for Sloane. But she won’t lift a finger.

That just proves you two are incompetent,” Madam Rivers snapped without hesitation.

Then her expression softened slightly as she turned to Sloane. Sloane, if they don’t want you, we do. Come with Grandma. Let’s see who dares to lay a hand on you again.

Marshall’s heart sank further. What on earth was the main family up to? Could there be something about Sloane that he didn’t know?

He tried to regain his footing, stepped forward again, and plastered on a smile. Ma’am, you’re right, and your scolding is well deserved. It’s just that Sloane’s gotten used to living with us. I’m afraid she might not adjust well to the main house. Yes, we’ve been strictbut that’s only because we care. If she leaves, it’ll break our hearts as parents.
