“No death,” he said lightly. “Just curious why you look like you’re trying to figure out the meaning of life over there.” He tilted his head to read the titles scattered around me. “‘Lycan bloodlines, Werewolf physiology, The Wolfless Paradox’…” His grin widened. “Wow. Someone’s desperate to get their wolf, huh?”

I snapped the book shut and met his eyes. “Is that so wrong?”

He blinked, surprised by the bite in my tone. “No,” he said after a beat. “I just didn’t think you cared about that kind of thing.”

“Well, you thought wrong. Now go away.”

For once, he didn’t have an immediate comeback. His expression shifted, narrow for half a heartbeat before that smirk slid back into place.

“You know,” he said, drumming his fingers against the table, “if you really want to fix this, I might be able to help.”

I frowned. “Help?”

He leaned forward, elbows on the table, closing the space between us in a way that made me instinctively pull back. “Yeah. There’s this old method my family uses. Kind of a… ritual, I guess. For wolfless who can’t shift. It’s supposed to break whatever’s blocking them. Worked for my cousin. At least I think it did. ”

I narrowed my eyes. “That sounds too good to be true. If it was, every wolfless would do it. Besides, why would you help me?”

“Because I like you,” he said easily.

My lip curled. “You don’t know me. What’s the catch?”

“No catch,” he said, and then, with a grin, “Just one date.”

I stared at him, before a small rage fired in my gut. “You’re unbelievable.”

“Relax. It’s not a mate thing,” he said quickly, holding up his hands. “No strings. Just a single date. You let me take you out, we talk about the method. Worst case, you get a free meal and a lead. Best case, you shift from it.”

“And you think I’d trust you to not make an idiot out of yourself all over again? I told you no.”

“Please,” he said. “I’d make an idiot out of myself regardless. You just have front-row seats. Besides, it’s just one date.”
