Clearly.
Or if the world wasn’t ending, at least his life was.
Deputy Officer Curtis stared at Eden with absolute disbelief. His eyes were wide, his jaw slack, and his voice came out cracked and accusatory.
"Are you trying to kill me?"
He sounded mortified. Deeply. Entirely. As if this were not the first time she had personally endangered his lifespan.
Well, of course, it wasn’t the first. Then again, that insane woman would just argue how it’s always been mutual.
Eden, still gripping his collar with one hand, only rolled her eyes. She tilted her head at him, unimpressed. "Then were you planning on going with the Marshal?"
Curtis balked. The mere thought tired him out. But then again, going with the Marshal was still better than going with the demon incarnate standing in front of him.
His relief lasted two seconds.
Because the demon shrugged casually and said, "Then it would be best to go with him. I have the expo passes anyway. Wouldn’t be hard to look for someone to go with."
Curtis felt electrocuted.
And it was not only him.
Because jokes on all of them. They might have the booth invitations, but how were they even going to use them without the actual expo passes?
Eden, of course, had predicted this. She had seen it coming back in Zone Four.
The moment they were told they were being invited, her first instinct was to secure full passes to the expo. And she did not buy just one. She purchased several just in case. The tech specialist with tingling senses had a major inkling that something was once again going to happen.
And sure enough, when the day of reckoning came, she was right.
The soldiers who had been setting dates moments earlier stopped everything and scrambled to log into the Annual Expo’s online ticket center.
Their horrified cries echoed through the mail room as they discovered that there were almost no event-long passes left. What remained were only daily passes that cost more, offered shorter access, and did not include VIP entry lanes.
"!!!"
The panic was justified.
The shrieks multiplied.
And the more she heard, the brighter Eden’s smile became.
From a few steps away, Nia watched all of it unfold. Her eyes lit up. This was her chance. She had heard about Specialist Eden and had met her briefly at Zone Four. Such a smart and decisive woman. What an idol.
She raised her hand, ready to volunteer. If anything, she would really like to learn from her.
But before the excited soldier could even step closer, Eden vanished from her line of sight.
"?!"
Curtis had moved.
In one swift motion, he encapsulated Eden with both arms and hid her face from everyone who had started looking at her like live prey.
Of course, there was no one in the room more predatory than this tiny woman, but today was different. Today, Curtis was a changed man who desperately needed those expo passes, and there was no way he would hand her over.
