The Secret Heirs of the Lycan King (by Misha K) novel Chapter 18

**When Midnight Winds Carry Secrets Toward Worlds Yet Unknown**
**Chapter 18**

**Bella**

“Promise me you’ll take care of the kids, Nancy,” I urged, my fingers deftly gathering my hair into a haphazard bun. A few rebellious strands escaped their confines, brushing against my neck like whispers of uncertainty.

“Absolutely, Bella,” she replied, a small, reassuring smile gracing her lips. But then, I noticed the concern etched in her eyes. “Are you alright? I really didn’t like that jerk who came to threaten you.”

The mere mention of Craig sent a shiver down my spine. I loathed him, and the memory of his predatory gaze still made my skin crawl. Even worse was the thought that he had looked at my children with those same eyes. “Please, Nancy, just promise me he won’t come near the kids again,” I implored, my voice low and firm.

“Don’t you worry about that,” Nancy assured me, her tone steady and resolute. “I’ll make sure of it.”

I wrapped my arms around her in a quick embrace, feeling her warmth anchor me amidst the chaos swirling around us. “I need to head to the mall now. I’ll return as soon as I can.”

“You made the right choice taking that deal,” Nancy said as I reached for my purse, her belief in me a small beacon of hope. “It’s going to be good for Emma and Ryan.”

Her faith brought a smile to my lips, and I stepped out into the bustling streets. As I climbed into the cab, I let the city’s vibrant tapestry unfold before me, each passing scene a reminder of the life I was trying to secure for my children. Yet, the gnawing fear in my gut persisted. If we had to remain in New York longer than anticipated, I needed to find a safe haven for the kids, away from prying eyes and unwanted attention. But first, I had to decipher how long this so-called “opportunity” would tether me to this place.

The mall was alive with energy, a symphony of voices and laughter echoing through the bright corridors. Music wafted from various stores, creating a lively backdrop as I navigated through the throngs of shoppers. I took four escalators to reach the top floor, then hopped into the elevator that whisked me to the twelfth floor, where Scott’s office awaited.

As I approached the glass desk, the secretary looked up, her professional smile a mask of cordiality. “Miss Williams,” she greeted, her voice smooth. “Mr. Moore is expecting you.” With that, she stood, collected a folder, and gestured for me to follow her down the expansive hallway.

Each step felt heavier than the last, a reminder of how much I had tried to avoid this moment. She opened a tall door and held it for me, allowing me to enter. The sight of Scott behind his long desk, sleeves rolled up and posture relaxed, was both comforting and unsettling. The moment our eyes met, I noticed the tension in his shoulders dissipate, replaced by a welcoming smile that seemed to light up the room.

I was conflicted. Anger simmered beneath the surface because he had manipulated me into signing that contract. Yet, there was an undeniable relief too—because I had stood up to Craig and informed him of my decision to partner with Scott. Now, I had a shield, whether I wanted it or not, and escape was no longer an option.

Turning to close the door, I caught a glimpse of the secretary in the outer office, her voice low as she spoke into the phone. She shot me a look that was almost disdainful, our eyes locking for a brief moment before she plastered on a quick smile and hurried away.

I faced Scott once more, determination in my voice. “I’m ready to begin,” I stated, keeping my tone steady. “Just hand me the documents, and I’ll review them in my room.”

He shook his head, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. “You can’t study them without me present.”

My brows knitted together in confusion. “Excuse me?”

“I need to be there with you,” he replied, his voice firm. “My reputation is at stake now. I must ensure every step is executed correctly and under my supervision.”

“I don’t require supervision,” I retorted, feeling heat rise within me. “I can handle this on my own, and I’ll keep you updated regularly.” My heart raced as I pointed at him, “You can’t force me to be with you.”

He chuckled softly, a sound that sent a wave of irritation coursing through me. “That’s quite amusing, coming from the woman who practically coerced me into sleeping with her five years ago.”

“Coerced? Can we please stop bringing that up?” I shot back, my voice rising slightly.

He stood and sauntered over to the credenza, pouring himself a glass of water before taking a slow sip. “You took from me, Bella. You didn’t leave me much room to think.”
