Chapter 28
The voice on the other end of the phone was incredibly seductive. “Just lift your precious finger and reply to me, will you?
Briar was silent for a moment,
Fox gave a haughty huff. “What are you thinking about? I heard from Black Wolf that you’re totally immersed in family warmth and even went to some university. Snake, you’re still young. Are you planning to retire already?”
At first listen, Fox’s voice sounded a bit overly coquettish, but the more one listened, the more one could hear a unique charm and allure.
Ignoring the fact that the person on the other end couldn’t see her. Briar rolled her eyes directly.
“Ever heard of the saying, the new generation pushes out the old? For people like us, retirement?” Wath that, she let out a humph.
Those stories about mercenaries returning to the family were all fake.
to retire.
For people like them, unless they died on a mission, they wouldn’t have the right to
No matter how deeply hidden, their past deeds would always be dug up one day.
It was either fight to the death, dying in the prime of life and in the most glorious and spectacular way, or the so–called retirement, hiding in a world that didn’t belong to them like a rat in the sewer
Even if they managed to die peacefully, they’d lived their whole life as a rat
No one would ever know that the rat in the sewer once had the sharpest fangs in the world.
And that was way scarier than death.
“Don’t talk like that. I’m not done playing yet! Top Boor of the Cheval Tower. You have half an hour, Fox said.
“I don’t have a car. Send someone to pick me up at Limond University
“Oh my? Fox exclaimed exaggeratedly, “Our Snake is famous as a local tycoon. I remember you had dozens of top–tier supercars in your garage in Mestruoland. Why so low–key in Limond“”
“Cut the crap! Are you coming or not? If you’re not here by eight, I’m going to bed when the dorm lights out”
The phone was silent for just a second before a series of clattering sounds of glass boules falling echoed.
“Wait! I’m on my way,” Fox agreed,
“Briar, you’re going out again!” Hearing Briar’s words, Mac couldn’t help but ask.
Briar had been going out almost every nighat these past few days, looking quite busy
Briar had already changed into her pajamas, and now she was getting dressed again
She put on a simple black T–shirt and light–wash jeans, topped with a black baseball cap. Her flawless face looked even more striking and aloof
“Yeah, be back before lights out” she replied.
Meanwhile, a black minivan was crawling along a congested street.
Inside, a bald man in a suit was lecturing earnestly, “Ronan, I know, with your status, doing this is frustrating for you–and me too, but what can we do about it?
“The big boss just got back from overseas, skipped Okwell entirely, and came straight to Limond. Not only did the higher–ups directly ask for you, but even those not in town are scrambling to get in front of the boss.
“Do you know how big the project is under Mr. Walsh and how much funding Ms. Davidson brought back this time? Just getting into the cast, even if it’s a supporting role, could be your ticket to a new image.
“Ms. Davidson holds the parse strings. She says the word, and getting someone into Mr. Walsh’s crew is a done deal?”
After rambling for a while, Elijah was parched and wanted a drink, only to see the man fixed on his phone

“Are you even listening to me?!” he asked.
Ronan glanced up from his screen, replying. “No, I’m going home.”
The few remaining hairs on Elijah’s shiny head almost stood on end. “Mr. Shepherd, stop acting like a spoiled brat.
“I heard Ms. Davidson isn’t just the biggest shareholder of Starlight Entertainment, but also of HK Group! That’s an international conglomerate with countless product lines. Any one of them could crush your family’s assets
“Isn’t your company short on investment? Let me tell you, a few coins slipping from Ms. Davidson’s fingers could save Shepherd Group
Even at this, Ronan didn’t lift an eyelid. “What’s that got to do with me?
“Hey, you
“Go home!” Ronan ordered.
Elijah looked at the driver, raising his voice. To Cheval Tower”
Then, he threatened while pleading with Ronan, At least show some respect for the big boss Just make an appearance! Don’t you know how many people at the company are gunning for your sport
You’re a man. Ms. Davidson is a woman. What could she force you to do?”
Ronan’s lips moved as if to say something, but eventually, he leaned back in his seat, closed his eyes in annoyance.
At night, as Briar exited the campus’s south gate, her eyes were immediately drawn to a striking red Ferrari parked right outside the campus
A woman was decked out in a sleek black dress, her shoulders draped with a pristine fur coat. Oversized sunglasses hid most of her face, while her wine–red waves and bold red lips exuded an irresistible charm
Briar’s mouth twitched as she fished a mask out of her pocket and slipped it on, then tiptoed over
Before she could say a word, the woman strode up and gave her a tight hug
The overpowering scent of perfume flooded Briar’s senses. It was not the subtle, expensive aroma of someone like Rhea, but something both pricey and pungen.
This mercenary woman who moved freely through war zones amidst a hail of bullets was, as always, utterly devoid of taste.
“Hey!
Miss me?” she asked.
“Shut up!” Briar wriggled out of Fox’s embrace, giving her outfit a look of utter disbelief.
