The Sleeper's Wrath and His Wife's Strike novel Chapter 18

She probably had some kind of post-rebirth paranoia—everyone looked suspicious to her these days.

“I really was a student, you know. I just graduated. It’s all in my records,” Horace explained.

Lindsay nodded, but her tone was skeptical. “Yes, that’s what you wrote, but writing something down doesn’t necessarily make it true.”

“If you don’t believe me, Ms. Nelson, you’re welcome to call my school and check.”

Lindsay waved a hand dismissively. “That would make it seem like I don’t trust you at all.”

Horace grinned. “It’s fine. I have nothing to hide. I can stand up to any background check.”

Lindsay patted his shoulder. “If I hired you, it means I trust you to a certain extent. Just do your job well, and you won’t regret working for me. When my husband wakes up, I’ll make sure he knows how devoted you were during the time he was in a coma.”

“I’m just doing my duty, ma’am.”

“That’s all I ask. But watch your back—you’ve stepped on quite a few toes in the Quigley family. I worry someone might try to cause you trouble.”

Lester and Helen weren’t exactly pushovers. Helen was sly enough, but Lester—he was downright cunning. She had a bad feeling he’d try something underhanded with Horace.

Horace’s expression didn’t change. “If you pay me, I’ll give it my all. And frankly, I’m not worried about any of them.”

Lindsay smiled, her eyes full of approval. “Good. I like your spirit.”

By evening, everyone in the Quigley family had returned except for the eldest brother, York, who was away on business.

Mr. Quigley Sr. and Lindsay had barely made it down the stairs when they saw the scene waiting in the living room: every face in the room was dark with anger, and the younger generation looked ready to explode.

Lindsay arched a brow. She could already tell—tonight, they were gearing up for another round of drama.
