“I get it, but Jessica is only eighteen or nineteen, and she was tricked onto this cruise. What Lindsay said makes sense. If she had the power to kill everyone on board, she wouldn't have been captured in the first place. We’re probably just overthinking it,” Cheryl said honestly.
Arthur cut straight to the point. “Have you seen the souls of the dead?”
He had known Cheryl for a decade and was well aware of her ability to see spirits.
At the mention of this, Cheryl grew puzzled. “It’s exactly like the saying, ‘not a ghost in sight.’ It's bizarre.”
After a person dies, their soul usually lingers near the place of death for a short time. For a ship with so many dead, it was unheard of to not find a single spirit. Even the journey to the afterlife has a waiting line.
“Hasn’t it occurred to you why there are no souls?” Arthur pressed.
“What do you mean? Are you suggesting someone captured their souls?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m not an expert like you, but even I know that spirits linger for a while after death. So tell me, where have the souls of over a thousand people gone?” Arthur demanded again.
Cheryl fell silent, pondering his question. After a long moment, she finally spoke. “I just remembered something my mentor once told me. Souls can be harnessed… used to craft things, like powerful elixirs or for dark rituals.”
“So, it’s almost certain that Jessica captured all those souls. I don’t think she was tricked onto this ship at all. It was deliberate. Her goal was simple: everything you see now. The only reason we’re still alive is probably because Lindsay took pity on her last night and spent a fortune to buy her. Jessica is showing her gratitude.”
“That’s only because of Lindsay. But I just confronted her, which was basically a provocation.”
Cheryl couldn’t bring herself to do it. She shook her head fiercely. “No. I’m no saint, but asking me to harm a young girl… I just can’t.”
“If you want to do something, you do it yourself. I’m staying out of it.”
“Cheryl, we’re all in the same boat here! When did you become such a coward?” Arthur was furious. He had asked for her help precisely because he knew she had certain abilities. Alone, one wrong move could get him killed.
“That’s not the issue. You said it yourself: if she killed all these people, it means she spared us out of respect for Lindsay. I believe she’ll continue to leave us alone, provided we don’t provoke her,” Cheryl argued urgently. “If you attack her now, how are you any different from her?”
