The phone rang suddenly. Yves glanced at the caller ID, his eyes darkening as he looked over at Lindsay. “Could you step out and get me a glass of water?”

It was an obvious excuse to send her away, but Lindsay did as she was told without protest, quietly leaving the room.

Nearly ten minutes passed before Yves finally opened the door and wheeled himself out.

Lindsay and Horace were both waiting in the living room. As Yves entered, their gazes immediately shifted to him.

“Here’s your water,” Lindsay said, rising to hand him the glass.

“Thank you.” Yves took a sip, then turned his attention to Horace, his tone cool. “I’ll settle your pay later tonight. After that, you’re free to go.”

Horace didn’t seem surprised by Yves' decision. He simply smiled faintly, his expression unreadable, and said nothing.

Lindsay was taken aback. She hadn’t expected Yves' first order of business after waking up would be to fire Horace. She hurried to interject, “Horace has helped us a lot these past weeks, and besides, we signed a six-month contract—it’s only been two months.”

Yves' actions reminded her of someone regaining their sight only to immediately toss aside their cane. While Yves had been in a coma, Horace had done his job with complete dedication. She’d even planned to renew his contract once it was up.

Even if Horace didn’t stay on as a caregiver, he’d make a damn good bodyguard. Where else was she supposed to find someone who could take on eight men at once?

“Then we’ll do it by the book,” Yves said, his voice firm. “I’ll pay every cent the contract demands for breaking it early, but he’s leaving.”

“Yves, let’s talk in private,” Lindsay said abruptly. Without waiting for an answer, she wheeled him back into the bedroom.

She closed and locked the door behind them, then faced Yves, calm but determined. “If you’re going to fire Horace, the least you can do is give him a reasonable explanation.”

“Have you actually looked at his résumé?” Yves shot back.

Lindsay frowned and nodded. “Of course I have. He fits my requirements perfectly. I’m very satisfied.”
