“If he wants everything I have so badly, then I’ll give her exactly what she wants.” Yves’ lips curled into a cold, predatory smile. “I’ve got a few properties under my name that have been losing money the moment I took them over, and some businesses that have been bleeding cash for years—honestly, they’re practically unsellable now.”
Those months he’d been in a coma hadn’t helped, either; without anyone to manage them, those failing assets had only sunk deeper into the red.
Lindsay’s eyes lit up instantly. She gave Yves a thumbs-up. “Impressive.”
“I was just wondering how I’d unload them, and wouldn’t you know it—someone volunteered.” Yves let out a low laugh. “Once he signs and takes over, he’ll be losing at least seven figures a day, minimum.”
Lindsay couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction. She might not be able to profit off Lester, but watching him bleed money was almost as good.
“Draw up a new contract,” she said, “but make sure it looks close enough to the old one. If Lester gets suspicious, we’ll have a problem.”
“I’ll get it done back at the office tomorrow. And to make this look convincing, let’s leave Lester hanging for a couple of weeks. If it’s too easy, he’ll start to question it.”
“But every extra day you hold onto those assets, you’re losing more money,” Lindsay said, genuinely concerned for him.
“It’s not important,” Yves replied softly, meeting her eyes with a rare tenderness. “What matters is seeing you happy. That’s worth more than any amount of money.”
His words went straight to Lindsay’s heart. She couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you.”
“There’s no need to thank me. We’re husband and wife, aren’t we?”
“In that case, I won’t say it anymore.” Lindsay paused, then shifted the conversation. “Why have you never asked me why I hate Lester so much?”
With her cherubic face and flawless, rosy skin, Alexia looked the picture of youthful vitality in her sportswear. She had an undeniably cute, almost doll-like appearance—though, beneath the innocent exterior, she belonged to a darker sort.
“Can I help you?” Alexia blinked up at Lindsay, her big, innocent eyes making it hard to believe she had a reputation for stealing husbands and playing matchmaker for the wrong sort of people.
Lindsay schooled her expression, extending a hand. “Hi, I’m Lindsay. Yves’ wife.”
Alexia didn’t recognize Lindsay, but she certainly knew Yves—he was Charles’ boss. But… since when was the boss married? Wasn’t he still in a coma?
“Hello, Ms. Nelson. Please, have a seat.” Alexia quickly poured her a cup of tea and set it on the coffee table. “Careful, it’s hot.”
Lindsay took the cup but set it aside, her gaze unwavering. “I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you.”
