A small laugh escaped her lips. The sound seemed to fuel their fury, making their glares even more intense.
“You’re calling me a murderer, is that right?” Penelope raised an eyebrow. “Then why haven’t you called the police?”
Her question hung in the air, and a wave of uncertainty washed over the Sullivans and the Winters.
“You… you’re daring us to call the police?” Mrs. Sullivan scoffed. “We were trying to be lenient, for old times’ sake! We don’t want to see you thrown in jail!”
“I’m supposedly trying to murder your grandson, and you’re worried about ‘old times’ sake’?”
“You’re still technically our daughter-in-law, and we…”
Penelope burst out laughing. “Oh, I see. You’re afraid of airing your dirty laundry in public.”
“You!”
“If the Sullivans won’t call the police, what about you two?” she said, turning her gaze to Mrs. Winters and Rebecca. “I’m so cruel, so vicious, I nearly killed you and the baby inside you.”
“Penelope, you were my best friend…” Rebecca began.
“Were we?” Penelope’s eyebrow shot up again.
Under Penelope’s mocking gaze, Rebecca instinctively cradled her stomach. “You hurt someone, you won’t even apologize, and you’re still acting so arrogant…”
“Is your hand injured?” Penelope asked, cutting Mrs. Winters off.
Mrs. Winters reflexively hid her hand behind her back. “Don’t change the subject! I want you to apologize to my daughter!”
“Let’s just call the police,” Penelope said, pulling out her phone. “Coincidentally, I just had security cameras installed at my house. The police will get a crystal-clear view of all my vicious, cruel acts.”
She actually started dialing. A collective panic seized the room. Mrs. Winters lunged, trying to snatch the phone.
Penelope sneered. What a bunch of idiots. She hadn’t had time to install any cameras in the new villa. It was a total bluff, and they’d fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.
Rebecca’s confession immediately alerted the Sullivans that they’d been played by the mother-daughter duo. Their faces darkened with fury and embarrassment.
“Penelope, I misunderstood. I apologize,” Zebulon said, stepping toward her. “But you should have just told us you were framed from the start! I would have believed you, of course!”
Penelope just stared at him. Even now, he was finding a way to shift the blame onto her. The man was truly something else.
But her temper was short.
She raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face. “So, the baby in Rebecca’s belly is yours.”
