Zebulon was clearly exaggerating. A man like Theodore would never have given him the time of day, let alone invited him to his wedding.
But Zebulon seemed utterly convinced, his arrogance growing with every word.
“Don’t you dare think Stone Group will fall apart without you. You overestimate your importance. Just you wait. I’m going to take this company to a whole new level.”
“I, Zebulon Sullivan, may have been content to be in your shadow before, but from now on, everyone will see what I’m truly capable of! Especially you, Penelope. You’re going to find out just how powerful I can be.”
His words were so childish that even a drunk person with an average IQ wouldn’t have said them.
Penelope crossed her arms, waiting for him to dazzle her. Instead, after a few more boasts, he swayed, stumbled backward, and landed on his butt.
“You think you’re so great? I fooled you for six years with one lie after another! Everyone says you’re so smart, but to me, you’re just a gullible, foolish, arrogant woman.”
Penelope sighed. It was early, and her mood had been perfectly fine until this waste of space decided to provoke her.
But he was about to find out the consequences of his actions.
“Zebulon, do you know what you look like to me right now?”
“What?”
“A dung beetle. Covered in filth, stinking up the place, and utterly disgusting.”
“You…”
“What does a dung beetle have to be so proud of? Is he hoping people will admire him for eating his fill of shit?”
“Penelope…”
“Actually, you’re worse than a dung beetle. At least it has the self-awareness to know it stinks and stays away from people. But you? You parade your filth around and spray it everywhere.”
Zebulon glared at Penelope, his eyes burning with a desire for immediate and vicious revenge.
“Penelope, I will never marry you! You can forget about it for the rest of your life!”
A small smile tugged at Penelope’s lips. She felt an overwhelming urge to thank him.
“I’m going to marry Rebecca, your best friend, and make her the future lady of the Sullivan family! Oh, and she’s pregnant with my child. The three of us are going to be very, very happy. You’ll regret this, but no matter how much you beg, I will never give you another chance.”
Penelope wanted to applaud. It was the best news she had heard in her entire life. One scumbag marrying another meant two fewer scumbags to wreak havoc on the rest of the world. What a wonderful thing.
Seeing that his words had no effect, Zebulon grew even more unhinged. He grabbed Rebecca, pulled her into a tight embrace, and smashed his mouth against hers, gnawing at her lips like a rabid animal.
