The Year I Was the Other Woman To Myself novel Chapter 29

When Zebulon saw her name on the screen, a look of panic flashed across his face. He fumbled with the phone, trying to decline the call, but perhaps fearing it would make her suspicious, he finally answered, frantically motioning for Rebecca to get off the bed.

When the video connected, Penelope saw Rebecca crawling on the floor like a frightened mouse, trying to stay out of the camera’s view.

“Hey, honey. Mmm, I just woke up,” Zebulon said, his voice groggy. He was shirtless, which made sense if he’d just been sleeping, but the faint smear of lipstick at the corner of his mouth was a dead giveaway.

“Is someone else in the room with you?” she asked, her eyes narrowing.

His gaze flickered. “What are you talking about? Of course not!”

“Hmmph. I don’t know. Something just seems off.”

“What seems off?”

“I can’t put my finger on it. You just have the look of someone who’s been up to no good.”

Zebulon forced a laugh. “Do you really have so little trust in me?”

“Flip the camera around and give me a tour of the room. I want to check.”

“Penelope, don’t be ridiculous.”

“Are you hiding something?”

With a put-upon sigh, he said, “Fine. I’ll let you inspect.”

He sat up, but out of the camera’s view, he waved desperately at Rebecca. After a moment's hesitation, she began to crawl, staying low to avoid being seen. From Penelope’s angle, she could see Rebecca’s naked body moving across the floor like a dog.

“Show me the left side of the bed!”

At her command, Rebecca scrambled to the front of the bed without needing a signal from Zebulon.

“Now the front!”

So she crawled to the right side of the bed.

“The right side.”
