“Penelope! She’s the reason this happened to me! I… I won’t let her get away with it!”
Zebulon pressed his lips together. “I warned you not to go head-to-head with Penelope. You can’t win.”
“Just because you’re a fucking coward, you think I am too?”
“Rebecca, that’s enough!”
“I was attacked! If you were a man, you’d go settle the score with the people who did this to me, not stand here yelling at me!”
“We’re divorced!”
“You’re not a man!”
“Get out of here, now! You’re not welcome in my home!”
“Is this your home? If you had any ambition, you wouldn't be squatting in someone else's house!”
“Rebecca!”
“Did I say anything that wasn't true?”
Their shouting woke up Yolanda. The little girl walked to the top of the stairs, rubbing her eyes.
“Daddy, Mommy, are you fighting again?”
Seeing his daughter, Zebulon quickly lowered his voice. “No, we were just talking a little loudly…”
“Yolanda, my life is so miserable!”
Rebecca, however, ignored him and burst into tears in front of her daughter.
Yolanda saw that her mother was hurt and rushed down the stairs.
“Mommy, what happened? Who hurt you?”
“My darling, you’re the only one who cares about Mommy! Everything I do, I do for you, but your father doesn't understand! Penelope, that bitch, do you know what she did to me? She threw me to those men…”
“Rebecca, shut up!”
Zebulon clamped a hand over Rebecca's mouth. How could she say such things to their daughter, without any regard for whether she could handle it or the scars it would leave on her young mind.
