“Ten thousand dollars? Are you robbing me?”
When she heard the price of the earrings, Mrs. Sullivan couldn't help but shriek.
“I have the receipt. You can look it up,” Penelope said calmly.
“My son probably bought them for you anyway!”
“Actually, no. On his salary, he couldn’t afford them.”
“You—!”
“Maybe I should just call Lilian. I’m sure she wouldn’t have so many complaints.”
“Don’t call her!” Mrs. Sullivan snapped. “I’ll pay. I’ll pay for it.”
Just then, Zebulon and Rebecca arrived to the sight of Mrs. Sullivan on her hands and knees, clutching her back and sorting through the pile, her face flushed and beaded with sweat. She looked utterly pathetic.
The moment she saw them, her eyes turned red.
“Penelope, how could you treat our mother like this?” Zebulon barked.
Our mother?
Penelope laughed. “She’s the one who threw my things on the ground. Shouldn’t she be the one to pick them up?”
“That doesn’t matter! She’s your elder!”
“Age makes you an elder? What about those who use their age to bully others?”
“Besides, I didn’t force her. I was cleaning it up myself when she insisted on taking over. I thought she had finally seen reason and decided to clean up her own mess.”
Zebulon looked at his mother in disbelief. Mrs. Sullivan opened her mouth, but she didn’t dare vent her true feelings.
“I… I wanted to do it.”
The words came out as a choked sob.
Rebecca immediately put on her concerned act. “Penelope, we know you’re angry, but you can’t take it out on an old woman! Let me help you, ma’am.”
His surprise was so genuine that Penelope had to laugh.
“Are you suggesting I wouldn’t want to?”
“Of course you wouldn’t!”
“And why is that, Zebulon? What part of you is so hard to let go of?”
His face flushed a deep red. “Fine! Divorce! You’ll be the one to regret it!”
“I have my dignity. I won’t.”
“You… you better think this through!”
“Can you just be a man for once and stop talking?”
“Fine! We’ll get a divorce tomorrow!”
