Outside the hotel, an ambulance rushed in with its siren blaring, then sped off again. Sophia and Annabelle stood together off to the side.
Charles and David waited on the opposite side, while Margaret accompanied Emily in the ambulance to the hospital.
“Sophia, why did you have to go so hard on Emily? She’s still your sister. Can’t you show her some kindness?” Charles said, sounding both heartbroken and frustrated.
Sophia exchanged glances with Annabelle, then made her way over to Charles.
She shot back, “Hard on her? Why don’t you ask why she’s always so hard on herself?”
Charles frowned and said, “David saw you shove Emily down the stairs himself, and you still deny it? Do I really have to get the police involved before you admit what you did?”
Sophia spread her hands and said, “Fine, go ahead and call the police.”
David could barely contain his anger, seeing how fearless she was.
He snapped, “Seriously, Sophia–this is how you talk to Dad?”
“Cut it out. If he actually acted like a father, maybe I’d bother acting like a daughter,” Sophia shot back.
Sophia thought, ‘The Evanses don’t even act like decent human beings, always pulling double standards. Honestly, not even anyone in the Westwood family can compare.
Charles’s face darkened as he looked at her defiant attitude. He demanded, “Come with me to the hospital. Emily got hurt because of you, so you’re going to apologize to her and take care of her until she’s discharged.”
Sophia walked right up to Charles and, out of nowhere, gave his hair a good yank.
“Ouch, mosquito,” she said.
Charles nearly lost his balance from the sudden pull, and when he regained his footing, his head was pounding. He shot Sophia a fierce glare.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he snapped.
Sophia stuffed the handful of hair she’d yanked into Annabelle’s hand and looked innocent. She said, “Just swatting a mosquito.”
She held out her hand–nothing there. She said, “Huh, guess it got away.”
“You” Charles sputtered, too furious to finish.
David was practically livid. He said, “You must be crazy! You seriously went and hit Dad?”
Sophia wasn’t about to get into it with him. She’d already got what she wanted, so she could just walk away
now.
She said, “I already said I was just swatting a mosquito. Why are you so hung up on it? Is stirring up between me and Dad your big scheme to grab all the inheritance for yourself?”
drama
David’s face changed drastically. He snapped, “Inheritance? The Evans family’s wealth is always mine. What does any of it have to do with you?”
Sophia narrowed her eyes and sneered, “Wow, you really don’t know a thing about the law, do you? Still stuck in the Stone Age, thinking a married daughter has zero claim on her own family’s assets?”
David might not always be the brightest, but he’d graduated with honors from the School of Economics and Management at Jelasburg University and even had a minor in law.
He knew full well that Sophia was entitled to a share of the inheritance.
“You’re not even officially part of the Evans family. How could any of this have anything to do with you?” David shot back, getting more and more agitated.
The moment the words left his mouth, he knew he’d slipped up. The next second, Charles lashed out and cracked David hard across the face.
“What nonsense are you talking about? Sophia, ignore your brother. After you married Lucas, everything was official–you’re part of the Westwood family now, your registration’s over there,” Charles snapped.
Annabelle finished sealing the hair in a clean pouch, then gave a chilly little laugh.
She sneered, “Wow, today’s really an eye–opener. The Evans family pampers the fake like she’s a princess, but can barely go a day without threatening their own flesh and blood.
“Tell me, if Sophie is really your daughter, what unspeakable thing could she have done to deserve this? Why else would you make her endure this torment?”
Annabelle just couldn’t hold back anymore.
She thought, ‘Even after Sophia was brought back into the Evans family, they never even bothered to officially add her to the family records.
‘So why did they even drag her back? Was it just to make her life hell?‘
