Sierra smiled and said, “You two get some rest. I’ll go boil some water and leave the kettle out in the main room. If you get thirsty later, just help yourselves. The light switch is right next to the wall. Just feel around and you’ll find it.”
“Thanks, Sierra. Sorry for bothering you and Derek tonight,” Sophia said.
“You hardly ever come back, and who knows when the next time will be? No need to stand on ceremony–just make yourselves at home, like it’s your own place,” Sierra replied warmly.
Then she looked at Annabelle and added, “First time out here in the countryside, huh? I know it’s a bit rough, but I hope you don’t mind.”
“Oh, Sierra, don’t say that! I really like it out here. Honestly, it’s us who are giving you and Derek all this trouble tonight,” Annabelle said with a cheerful grin.
Truthfully, except for that one time she went camping just for fun, she’d never stayed anywhere quite this basic.
But there was a first time for everything. She’d just have to get used to it.
They chatted for a few more minutes before Sierra finally closed the door behind her and left.
The room was dimly lit, the cement walls soaking up every bit of light, and the unmistakable scent of cement still hung in the air.
Sophia said, “We’ll just rough it for tonight. Tomorrow, we’re outta here.”
Annabelle sat down on the edge of the bed—it was a far cry from her big plush mattress back home. This one was so stiff she could feel every bump pressing into her.
Whatever popped into Annabelle’s mind, she started giggling to herself.
“Just give this bed a little wiggle and it starts creaking non–stop,” Annabelle said, rocking back and forth so the whole wooden frame wobbled along with her.
Sophia reached out and steadied her. “Alright, cut it out. If you keep shaking the bed like that, the whole frame’s gonna collapse. You wanna be the one telling Sierra why her bed’s busted?”
Annabelle smirked. “Relax–who cares? We’re both girls. Nothing scandalous is happening here.”
Sophia shook her head. “We’ve been driving all day. Aren’t you tired? Let’s just get some sleep.”
Annabelle calmed down a bit. “So, which side do you want–inside or outside?”
“I’ll take the outside. Wouldn’t want you tumbling off in your sleep,” Sophia said, kicking off her shoes and settling onto the bed.
Once Annabelle got ready for bed and lay down, Sophia climbed in beside her.
Chapter 161
They barely had a chance to settle in before the exhaustion took over and they both drifted off to sleep.
Sophia’s sleep was pretty light.
First night in a new place–she couldn’t settle in. Plus, what Derek and Sierra said outside carlier had her a little on edge.
So when the chickens and ducks in the back suddenly started screeching and flapping like mad, she shot up wide awake.
She lay in bed, the thick clouds outside smothering any trace of moonlight–the kind of pitch black where you couldn’t even tell your own hand from the darkness.
Sophia listened to her own rapid, anxious breaths, then fumbled for her phone to check the time.
It was four A.M.
Beside her, Annabelle was totally out, her breathing smooth and peaceful. ‘Man, I’m so jealous–how does she just drift off like that?‘ Sophia thought.
She set her phone aside, hoping sleep would come–but her mind refused to settle. She just kept tossing and turning until her head started to ache.
Finally, she slipped out of bed as quietly as she could, put on her shoes, and tiptoed out the door.
The whole place was eerily quiet. Sophia flipped on the living room light and poured herself a cup of water.
She noticed something weird–the water in her cup just wouldn’t stop rippling, like those tiny waves were refusing to calm down.
Just as she was starting to get suspicious, the whole world suddenly started shaking. ‘Oh crap, this is bad!‘ Sophia thought, and bolted back to the room.
“Annabelle, wake up! Earthquake!” Sophia yelled, practically shaking her with panic.
Annabelle was out cold, and Sophia had to smack her cheeks–hard! The sting finally pulled Annabelle back to reality.
“Sophie, I’m so tired… Quit fussing,” Annabelle groaned, still half in dreamland.
“Annabelle, I mean it–earthquake! Hurry and get dressed. We need to get out, now!” Sophia urged, scrambling to pull on her own clothes.
Panic written all over her face, Sophia could feel the floor shuddering beneath her, as if the whole earth was rippling and rolling–it was getting worse by the second.
They had to get out to an open space, fast–just wait it out until the shaking stopped.
Annabelle snapped awake at Sophia’s panicked tone and jerked into action, hurriedly pulling on her clothes and slipping her feet into her shoes as she got out of bed.
Sophia realized this quake was no joke. She grabbed Annabelle and rushed her outside, stuffing her own bag into Annabelle’s arms–then spun right back around and dashed inside to wake Derek and Sierra.
