The pouring rain hammered Sophia, soaking her through in seconds.
She sat on the ground, feeling water running down the slope and soaking into her clothes.
Her hands were tightly secured to the tree trunk with a tie, knotted with a double knot–almost like Lucas was determined not to let her escape.
Sophia refused to just sit there helplessly. She twisted her head, desperately trying to bite through the tie and loosen the knot.
But whatever devious knot Lucas had tied, the more she struggled, the tighter it became.
Panic made her break out in a cold sweat, and the icy rain only made her shiver uncontrollably.
But Sophia refused to accept her fate.
She wasn’t going to die here.
After a brief rest, Sophia started biting again, her arms rubbing against the rough bark until the skin was raw.
The pain was so intense it numbed her, and blood seeped from the corners of her mouth where it had scraped against the tree.
The rain poured even harder, and Lucas was still nowhere to be found.
As the cold seeped into her bones, Sophia’s body grew numb. Slumped against the tree, a wave of despair washed over her. ‘Is this how it ends?‘ she thought. ‘No flood or landslide, just being slowly claimed by the cold?‘

Meanwhile, back at the camp, Annabelle returned to the tent, only to find it empty. Sophia was nowhere to be
seen.
Annabelle took out her phone to call Sophia, but saw Sophia’s phone glowing beside the pillow.
‘s weird. Did she go somewhere without her phone? Maybe she just went to the bathroom?” Annabelle ered, her suspicion growing.
nabelle couldn’t help but feel that something wasn’t right.
She hung up the phone, sat down on the sleeping mat, and gingerly touched her tingling lips, that smile on her face getting even dreamier.
‘Such a bad boy soldier,‘ Annabelle thought, her heart skipping a beat. ‘He sure wasn’t gentle. He kissed me like he meant it, my lips still aching.‘
She lingered in the moment, replaying the kiss in her mind, until the sound of thunder outside snapped her

back to reality. Annabelle quickly pulled open the tent flap and stepped out.
She scoured the entire camp, even checked the public bathrooms, but there was still no sign of Sophia anywhere.
As the storm clouds rolled in, Annabelle’s anxiety really started to spike.
She hurried over to Richard’s tent, calling out, “Uncle Richard, is Sophie with you?”
Richard was just getting ready for bed; hearing Annabelle, he stepped out with a frown. “She’s not in your tent?”
Annabelle shook her head, “No, that’s why I’m here. It’s about to pour, and I’ve looked everywhere I could think of–even the plaza and all the bathrooms–but she’s just gone!”
Richard frowned. “When I left, she said she was just going to sleep. I’ll go with you to look for her.”
Saying this, he picked up his phone and went with Annabelle to search for Sophia.
Under the tree, Sophia was so cold she curled herself into a tight ball. She could barely make out a faint shaft of light sweeping back and forth in the distance.
In that moment, a desperate will to survive surged through her like never before.
“Help! Somebody, please help me! Help!” she cried, her voice raw with panic.
She was shouting with everything she had, but the pounding rain swallowed her screams.
The light swept across her spot a few times, then turned away and disappeared into the night, leaving her alone once more.
Despair crashed over Sophia in an instant.
‘Seriously? Is God just set on wiping me out?‘ she thought, her heart sinking.
Her emotions were all over the place; she’d already hit her limit. After all that struggling, her body felt completely spent, and waves of darkness kept flickering before her eyes.
Just as she was about to black out, a beam of light pierced the rainy darkness, coming closer and closer.
Soon, she could hear heavy footsteps splashing urgently through the storm.
Then came a voice she knew by heart, cutting through the noise. “Sophia, don’t be afraid. I’m here.” It was Lucas.
That voice soothed her battered nerves; her eyelids drooped, and all her tension faded away.
She allowed herself to slip into the darkness, certain now that she was safe.
Richard dropped to one knee next to her, instantly pulling her limp body protectively into his arms.

He’d already flung his umbrella aside, hands flying to the soaking tie that was biting into her wrists, working feverishly to get it off.
Annabelle came running, tossed her umbrella without a second thought, and dropped to her knees in the pouring rain, fingers shaking as she struggled to untic Sophia.
