Sophia stared blankly at the ceiling, lost in thought. Back when she was living in the countryside, her neighbor had told her something.
Marriage was like opening the door to a whole new life. If she met someone truly good, she might go her whole life never having to witness the darkness in people.
But if she ended up with the wrong person, they’d make sure she experienced every ugly side of human nature up close.
Sophia once thought only Emily was that kind of greedy, selfish person, but now it was clear Lucas was no different.
Sophia said, “Annabelle, help me hire a divorce lawyer. I’m afraid it’s not gonna be easy for me to get divorced.”
Fortunately, when Helen insisted that Sophia sign the divorce agreement, she made sure to keep a copy for herself.
Sophia’s words came true. Helen’s birthday party was a total fiasco, and it quickly turned into a laughingstock among the upper class.
Back home, the more Helen fumed, the more she couldn’t let it go. She dug out the divorce papers and the compensation agreement she’d signed with Sophia and then ripped them both to absolute shreds.
Helen thought, ‘Sophia thinks she can just divorce Lucas? Over my dead body! If she wants out, I’m going to make sure she begs for my permission.’
As soon as Sophia’s injury report was released, David was taken in by the police for questioning.
The Evans family had ruffled plenty of feathers in the business world, so the moment David got picked up by the police, headlines broke out everywhere.
Once the market opened back home, the Evans Group’s stock plummeted. Their partners wasted no time cutting ties. Just like that, a heavy gloom settled over the entire company.
Charles spent the whole morning fielding one cancellation call after another from business partners. He was so mad he thought his blood pressure might literally explode.
Just as he was about to completely lose it, Emily showed up carrying a lunchbox, and right away, Charles’s face softened.
“Emily, come on in. Have a seat,” Charles said.
Emily came over and sank onto the sofa. The moment she saw Charles’s bloodshot eyes and how utterly drained he looked, she felt her chest tighten.
“Dad, no matter how crazy things get, you’ve got to take care of yourself. You’re the one holding the Evans family together,” Emily said.
“Great. You really are my pride and joy,” Charles replied.
Emily sat quietly by Charles’s side, waiting until he finished every last bite.
Only then did she speak up. “David’s still locked up at the station. The police say Sophia has to sign a forgiveness letter. Without her okay, the lawyer can’t bail him out.
“Dad, let me go ask Sophia for help. We’re all family. Nobody should hold a grudge overnight.”
Charles wasn’t about to swallow his pride and go plead with Sophia himself. Since Emily volunteered, he just nodded and let her handle it.
In the hospital. After Lucas went back to his ward, his head cleared as he reflected on Sophia’s cold attitude and Annabelle’s biting remarks.
Even if he didn’t buy Sophia’s miscarriage story, he was hell–bent on getting answers. He’d dig up every scrap of evidence- no matter what–just to get to the truth and rip away her lies.
With a cold expression, Lucas grabbed his phone and made a quick call, “Kevin, look up everything Sophia did the night of my birthday party–leave nothing out.”
