At the Haberkorn residence, Laura paced anxiously, waiting for Thomas to return with good news.
When he finally rushed back, she asked with eager anticipation, "Well? Did Mrs. Hamilton agree to join my dinner party?"
She had heard that Noelle was on good terms with Albert, so she had devised a plan. Since Nancy wouldn't let her meddle in Hunter's personal affairs, she would instead ally with Arielle Glover and use her to deal with Noelle.
But Thomas shook his head helplessly. "Mrs. Hamilton said she's too busy to attend. She told me that if you have something to say, just get to the point."
Laura's face darkened instantly.
She immediately called Arielle herself, though she knew if her personal invitation had already been refused, a phone call wouldn't fare much better.
The line rang for over ten seconds before Arielle lazily picked up. "Who's this?"
Laura quickly introduced herself and dove straight in. "Mrs. Hamilton, that little tramp Noelle is too much. She's clinging to my younger son and also hanging around your son. Don't you think it's time to put her in her place—or at least tell your son to keep his distance?"
"Ms. Quinn is captain of the national team," Arielle replied bluntly. "She'll soon represent Stonegate in international competition. For my son, being friends with her is a blessing. If she actually took an interest in him, I'd be thrilled."
Laura nearly choked on her own anger. She hadn't expected Arielle to side with Noelle.
What kind of answer was that? It made her sound unreasonable.
"And another thing," Arielle continued without softening her tone. "I've heard about your family's situation. Laura, as a mother, you shouldn't interfere too much in your son's life.
"That fiancée you picked out for Hunter is, frankly, rather spineless. If you like weaklings, that's your choice, but you can't stop your son from choosing someone strong."
Her words stung, but Arielle had the authority to speak them. She was the matriarch of the Hamilton family, wife to the man who held absolute power. Compared to her, Laura was nothing more than a side-branch with little standing.
Laura had no comeback.
Arielle hung up without another word.
Grinding her teeth, Laura turned to Thomas. "Any news about the Quinn family's heiress?"
He shook his head. "All we know is that when the Quinn family split, the head of the Quinn family took his daughter and went into seclusion, leaving everything to an agent. Over the years, their holdings have been scattered, and now they're more desperate than we are to find her. She could already be dead."
"Impossible!" Laura snapped. If not for the debt the Quinn family owed them back then, the Quinn family would never have married their daughter off to such a distant branch of the Haberkorn family.
If Liam had married the Quinn family's heiress, the position of family head would have been theirs to claim.
Instead, she was stuck stewing in frustration.
