"It's you." Anne froze, shock written all over her face.
Before Noelle could speak, Jenna darted behind her, looking aggrieved. "Captain! You're finally here! Alexis is still locked inside. You have to save her!"
"Captain?"
In that instant, Anne understood. Her eyes flicked from Hunter behind Noelle to Noelle's calm face. Her voice trembled with disbelief. "You went back to racing."
It wasn't a question. It was a certainty.
Noelle lifted her gaze, steady as ever. "Yes."
Everyone, except Hunter, was thrown off balance.
What the hell? Anne knew Noelle?
Anne wasn't just anyone. She was an internationally ranked A-level racer! Their captain, on the other hand, was a member of the national team. Between the two of them stretched four entire levels, each one almost impossible to leap.
Anne's expression darkened. She raised her hand, about to slap Noelle, but Hunter moved faster, blocking her.
His eyes burned with warning, anger, and danger as he glared at Anne.
Noelle tugged lightly at his sleeve and shook her head, signaling him not to act.
Anne let out a cold laugh. "So, after all these years, you're still her most loyal dog."
Her words were aimed straight at Hunter.
Noelle stood her ground, her tone firm. "No matter what, Alexis did nothing wrong. She's just a young racer. You don't need to drag her into this."
"And what does that have to do with you?"
Anne shoved Hunter's arm away and stepped up, glaring daggers at Noelle. "Who the hell do you think you are, lecturing me? Do you really believe you're still that captain everyone used to admire and follow?"
Her finger jabbed hard against Noelle's chest. "You're nothing but a traitor—a coward. You ran away and left your teammates to bear all the pain. What right do you have to race again?"
Anne's eyes flickered with conflict, but a mocking smile quickly returned. "Someone like her, with no backing or real skill, was never worth my attention anyway."
She leaned in close, her stare sharp and scornful. "But don't think you can just waltz back onto the international stage. You walked away once. Don't imagine it'll be that easy to come back."
She gave Noelle a hard shoulder check as she passed, then left without looking back.
Everyone's nerves were on edge, but Noelle breathed a sigh of relief. If Anne had said that much, it meant she wasn't going to target Alexis again.
Noelle turned to her team. "I need you all to keep what you heard today—about me being Sheila—to yourselves. This isn't the time for unnecessary complications."
Jenna's voice carried a trace of disappointment. "And Alexis? You're not going to tell her either?"
Noelle fell silent, then shook her head. "When the time is right, I will. But not now. Right now, I don't deserve that name."
Once, she had been fearless. But now? At the very least, she would need to return to the international stage and win again before she could call herself Sheila.
The team exchanged looks, but in the end, they chose to respect her wishes.
