Too Late for Regret (Annalise and Roger) novel Chapter 165

Laney’s POV

I was waiting to see what they would do next when the door slammed opened and Seth walked in. He held his hand out towards me to help me step over the two women lying on the floor. He held his other hand out to his mother and put us behind him before he turned to look at the two women who seemed to be flustered by his presence. I could see his reflection in the mirror when he turned back towards them. His face was a mask of anger and disgust.

“How dare you confront my wife? I chose her, not you two. I haven’t spoken to either of you for years. What makes you think that you had a chance with me? Just because you want me doesn’t mean I want you. Laney is my wife, and you two better think before you try to approach her again,” Seth ground out.

I’ve never seen him this angry, and to be honest, it’s turning me on to see how protective he’s being. Seth is usually pretty even-tempered. He clearly doesn’t care about either of these women. He hasn’t asked anything, so I believe he’s been here for a minute and knows what happened.

I don’t feel bad for either of these women. They had no chance with him, yet came in here to give me a hard time. How could they even believe that he would change his mind? Did they honestly think that he was going to say, ” You know what, you’re right. I’ve changed my mind and I choose you instead.” These women are incredibly bold to have tried this in the first place.

“We were already in here, and she came in here yelling at us, Seth. She’s really aggressive and confrontational. I hope you’re aware that she will likely cause you embarrassment in the long run. Why would you choose someone like her, instead of one of us?” Dominique asked.

“That’s a lie, and I’ll remind you that there are cameras throughout this venue. The truth can be proven, so be careful about what you’re about to say. My mother saw you following Laney. We already heard what happened, so save your breath,” Seth replied.

“I thought you enjoyed our date, Seth?” Katherine whined.

“I was forced into that date; I didn’t decide to go out with you on my own. You know better than to think it was good. You’re shallow, and I find you clingy and annoying. The sound of your voice is irritating to me. We haven’t spoken in years, so why would you think I was interested in you? I think you decided that we should be together, and you didn’t care what I wanted. Let me assure you both, I have no interest in either of you. I have no interest in any other woman. Laney holds my heart, so let this be a cautionary tale. I’m happily off the market. I don’t want to have anything to do with anyone, unless it’s Laney,” Seth snapped out.

He didn’t care that he was hurting their feelings. He looked like he wanted to say even harsher words to them, but was holding back. I know that he’s trying to keep me from being embarrassed by anyone overhearing the conversation, but I did nothing wrong. They’re the ones who came in here with an agenda.

“You can’t mean that, Seth. Both of our families are highly respected. We’re both acceptable choices, more than anyone else,” Dominique replied. “Why couldn’t you give us a chance? It wasn’t like you were super selective before; my older sister went to college with you. Yet now you’ve suddenly grown a conscience? You never even gave us a chance to prove to you that either of us could be the perfect wife for you. You’ve embarrassed yourself in front of everyone by marrying a nobody. She’s got you so hypnotized, Seth, that you can’t even see that she’s completely unworthy. You need to open your eyes before you end up humiliating your family even more,” Dominique shot back in anger.

“We’re not close, and I can assure you that we’re not friends. Never call me by my given name again; it’s Mr. Caldwell to you. Don’t you see where you went wrong here? You came rushing in here to catch my wife by surprise, and potentially assault her, and we all know it.

Yet instead of apologizing, you want to argue the reasons why you did what you did. You’re the ones who are completely in the wrong in this, and I don’t mind pointing it out to you. I see where your priorities lie; instead of being concerned about your family, you’re still trying to get with me. It’s not going to happen. You should be concerned about what’s about to happen next, as my father has already sent his assistant to start canceling the contracts,” Seth told them.

“What? No, you can’t do that, Katherine cried out. Her face showed just how panicked she was at my words.

“We can, and we will. Did you honestly think that you two could walk away unscathed? I was here, I heard you, and I will not allow you to treat Laney like this. She’s a member of our family. We love her and her brothers. If you mess with one of them, you’ll be dealt with. I will be heading straight for both your mothers’ the minute I leave this room. I’m quite sure that Reid is going to be doing the same with your father’s. There is no escaping this; you took a foolish chance when Seth was never interested in either of you to begin with. It’s okay to be jealous of Laney; it’s not okay to try to bully her into getting an annulment. Your parents will leave here tonight knowing what’s coming and who’s responsible for it,” Alicia told them.

“I will be speaking to Judge Hatfield the moment I step out of here. I assure you that by Monday, everyone will be aware of what you two have done. You know how quickly gossip spreads; you’ve done enough of it in your lives.

I don’t plan on being quiet during my conversation with him,” Seth added.

“But doing that is going to humiliate us. We don’t deserve it. We didn’t do anything to her. If anyone should be in trouble, it’s her for assaulting our bodyguards. She didn’t have to hurt them; they’re still out cold,” Katherine stated, looking at the two women still lying on the floor.
