Liliana was taken aback, not quite understanding what he meant.
“Grandpa, why are you telling me this now?”
Liliana knew the Coopers had adopted Isabella because her parents had done them a great service. It was because of this debt of gratitude that Linton treated her like a real sister, always looking out for her.
“After all these years, haven't you ever been curious?”
Old Mr. Cooper sat behind his desk, stroking his white beard, his sharp, aged eyes filled with a profound meaning.
Liliana lowered her gaze. She had been curious before, but it was more a feeling of injustice. What kind of favor could have been so great that it would make Linton—and the entire Cooper family—go to such lengths?
But now… Liliana had already made up her mind to leave Linton. The truth no longer mattered.
Whatever it was, it wouldn't change her decision.
“Sir, I don’t care anymore,” Liliana said, her voice wavering slightly as she told the truth.
Old Mr. Cooper looked up, studying her carefully. He saw the detached, emotionless expression on her face and knew she was serious. This wasn't a tantrum or words spoken in anger; she truly didn't care.
He let out a heavy sigh, his tone laced with resignation. “Liliana, I know this truth is coming far too late for you, but I still want you to know.”
“Consider it a final piece of closure for your relationship with Linton.”
Liliana fell silent for a moment before giving a hesitant nod. The old man’s words had struck a chord. No matter what, she and Linton had been entangled for so long. Even if she was determined to leave, she couldn't let things end in a fog of ambiguity.
