"At the end of the day, it's all because he's incompetent!"
Mrs. Grayson was resolute in her hatred for the innocent young man before her, her cool, distant voice turning sharp and cruel. Liam listened to her unrestrained insults and accusations, his eyes downcast, his expression dark and pained. But he endured it, saying nothing.
Liliana pressed her lips together, her frown deepening. She felt increasingly uneasy.
"Mrs. Grayson, it's not my place to interfere in your family's affairs, but the conflicts of the older generation have nothing to do with the younger one. No one chooses to be born an illegitimate child. If he had a choice, I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted this."
Liliana looked up at her and said softly, "Mrs. Grayson, I know I shouldn't say this, since I haven't walked in your shoes. You have every right to be hurt, but Liam is innocent too. This cycle of blame won't solve anything. For the sake of all he's done for Matthew, please, just let it go."
Mrs. Grayson's brows knitted together tightly. She looked displeased, but because she still needed Liliana's help, she coldly averted her gaze and said nothing more, a silent concession.
Mrs. Hart seized the opportunity to smooth things over. "Liam, dear, are you here to see Liliana?" she asked with a smile. "Why don't you come back after we return from the station? I'll make you some of your favorite food."
