Too Late, Mr. Cooper: Your Bride Ran with Your Baby novel Chapter 341

Linton stared down at the smashed cake in his hands, a long silence stretching before a bitter, helpless smile touched his lips. He'd known from the moment Gabriel came to find him.

For the two months leading up to Liliana's delivery, his sole purpose was to be her punching bag. The girl had a strong moral compass. After seeing the contents of Matthew's laptop and learning he had used Isabella's hand to orchestrate his own escape from a world of pain, she would never be able to forgive herself.

Liliana already felt a share of responsibility for Matthew's death. Now, knowing he’d harbored a death wish for a long time, plagued by suicidal depression, she would only blame herself more.

Why hadn't she noticed the despair, the helplessness, the utter collapse of her friend's inner world? Especially when that friend had always presented himself as a perfect gentleman—kind, patient, indulging her whims with a smile, even helping her navigate the anxieties of her own love life.

Matthew had done so much for her. But when he needed a hand the most, she hadn't been there to pull him back from the edge. She hadn't even sensed the barren wasteland his heart had become. How could Liliana possibly forgive herself for that?

The guilt was a wall she couldn't climb, a tidal wave of self-reproach that threatened to drown her. It would send her spiraling, and if left unchecked, it would undoubtedly lead to a psychological break.

She had nowhere to vent these torturous emotions.

And so, Linton became the perfect outlet. Wasn't that Gabriel's intention all along, setting aside their animosity to bring him here? Better for Liliana to have someone she could unleash her fury on than to let the guilt fester and consume her from the inside out.

Besides, Linton was a willing participant. He was desperate for any chance to be near her, to take care of her and the baby. He’d take whatever he could get, even if it meant being the target of her daily tirades, her words like daggers aimed at his most vulnerable spots, leaving his heart a bloody mess. As long as he could be close to Liliana again, as long as he could look upon the girl he had loved for so many years, he would gladly endure any amount of pain.

It was a strange, masochistic arrangement, but one they both, in their own ways, accepted.
