Liliana lay quietly on the bed, her back to Mrs. Hart. Her captivating eyes were wide open, staring out the window into the darkness.
She couldn't sleep.
Usually, around this time, Linton would sneak in and climb into her bed, holding her tightly as he helped her sleep, worried she wouldn't be able to turn over comfortably with her large belly.
He was always afraid she'd get cold, so he would take a hot shower beforehand, his skin flushed and warm, like he’d been boiled. He was wonderfully warm to hold.
Liliana would usually sneer and scratch his face, trying to drive him away, but Linton’s skin was as thick as a fortress wall; he was impossible to get rid of.
He would cling to her like a burr, refusing to let go, insisting on staying with her through the night to make sure she was okay.
He would stay awake all night, carefully watching over her, never daring to sleep himself.
There was no getting rid of him. He was incredibly annoying.
Tonight was the first time in a long while that Liliana had slept without Linton’s arms around her.
For some reason...
She had insomnia.
Liliana suddenly turned and snuggled into Mrs. Hart's embrace, resting her head in the crook of her mother's neck, seeking warmth.
Mrs. Hart smiled at her. "What is it, Liliana? Are you cold?"
Liliana didn't speak. After a long moment, she gave a barely perceptible nod and mumbled, "Yes."
Mrs. Hart frowned slightly and got out of bed to turn on the heater, muttering to herself.
