Liliana's face drained of color. Her fingers tightened around her phone. Of all the times for this to happen…
Helena saw her expression change. "Liliana, what's wrong?" she whispered.
Liliana's lips trembled, her face pale. "Old Mr. Cooper… he had a heart attack. He's in the hospital."
"They've issued a critical condition notice. He wants to see me."
Helena was stunned. "Are you going to go?" she asked, then immediately corrected herself with a frown. "Of course you have to go. He's always been so good to you. It wouldn't be right."
Liliana quickly got the hospital details from her mother and hung up. "Helena, I have to go to the hospital. I'm so sorry, you came all this way for nothing."
"What are you talking about?" Helena said, her tone urgent. "This is no time for apologies." She grabbed Liliana's arm and started pulling her toward the exit. "Come on, I'll get a cab. I'm going with you to see him."
The abortion was definitely off the table now. In the taxi, Liliana canceled her appointment.
Helena glanced at her. "Liliana, the timing of this is just too perfect," she couldn't help but say. "Don't you think maybe it's a sign from the universe, telling you to keep the baby?"
Helena knew how much Liliana had always wanted to be a mother. She had grown up surrounded by love in a happy, stable home, and she'd always dreamed of finding someone she truly loved, and who truly loved her back. She wanted to build a family, to have children, to be a wonderful mother just like her own, passing that happiness down.
That was why Helena had kept asking if she was sure. She didn't want her best friend to make an impulsive decision she would regret for the rest of her life.
Liliana lowered her gaze, staring at the 'Appointment Canceled' notification on her phone for a long time before she pursed her lips.
