"What else did you expect?"
Linton's expression was indifferent, his tone cool. He didn't even spare Isabella a glance. "She's my fiancée. It's only natural."
Isabella's hand, holding Logan, tightened unconsciously. She swallowed her resentment, forcing a smile. "You're right. Seeing you and Liliana so happy together puts my mind at ease."
"Otherwise, if Liliana is always getting angry with you because of me, and it causes real problems between you two, I would feel terribly guilty."
Her gentle voice was thick with apology.
"You've just reminded me of something," Linton said, his tone turning frosty, like a biting winter wind that sent a shiver down the spine. "From now on, if you need anything, call Mom. She's retired and has nothing better to do."
"I have to placate Liliana. I'm very busy. Unless it's a life-or-death emergency, don't call me. It makes Liliana angry."
"I…" Isabella bit her lip, her eyes welling with tears, her voice cracking. "Brother, it's all my fault. I'll be more careful in the future."
"It's just Logan… he just lost his father. He's only three. It's so tragic."
Isabella hugged Logan tighter, stroking his still-warm cheek as her lips trembled. "Logan relies on you so much. There are things that I, as his mother, just can't give him."
"I know Liliana gets jealous and upset easily. I can see you less, and I can stay away from the Cooper estate. But Logan… Brother, for Matthew's sake, I hope that when you have time, you can occasionally be there for him."
Her face, usually gentle and compliant, was now a mask of pitiable desperation. Her tone was practically begging, her posture so humble it would be difficult for anyone to refuse.
Linton lowered his gaze, his thoughts drifting to her husband, Logan's father, Matthew.
He and Matthew had been friends.
