While Liliana poured her days and nights into the company, Aiden was a constant, patient presence by her side, helping her brainstorm ideas and refine her jewelry designs. Her morning sickness had been severe lately, and he would quietly take care of her, bringing her tea and crackers, yet never once asking why she was feeling unwell. He knew she didn't want to talk about it, and he respected her privacy.
One evening, as Liliana was packing up to go home, Aiden stopped her. "Liliana," he said with a gentle smile, "Professor Foster knows you've started your own design studio. He's been asking about you constantly, dropping hints that he'd like to see you."
Liliana froze.
When she graduated, she had broken her professor's heart by ignoring his glowing recommendations and stubbornly taking a junior position at Linton's company. He was a man who cherished talent, and he couldn't stand to see her throw away her gift for a man. In a fit of anger, he had declared he was disowning her as his student, and they hadn't spoken since.
A wave of guilt washed over her. For years, she had been too ashamed to reach out, afraid of making him even angrier. He was getting older, in his late sixties, and the thought of causing him any more stress was unbearable.
"Really?" she asked, her eyes lighting up with a hopeful spark. When she looked at him like that, her beautiful eyes shining, she reminded him of a curious kitten. Aiden couldn't help but chuckle. The warmth in his eyes, usually hidden behind his gold-rimmed glasses, softened. "When have I ever lied to you? His birthday is in a couple of days. If you want to see him, I'll let him know and take you with me to the celebration."
Sensing her lingering hesitation, he added, "This was his idea, by the way. He regretted what he said the moment the words left his mouth. He was just too proud to take them back, and you never called, so… things just got stuck in that awkward place."
