In the cold wind, I wore a heavy coat but still felt cold. That chill didn’t just come from the wind and snow, but seemed to spread outward from deep within my heart.

When I approached, he got out of the car and opened the door for me.

“Thank you,” I said softly.

“Where are we going now?” he asked.
