“Raine, are you out of your mind? How could you do something like that?” Helene’s voice was sharp, her face full of righteous anger.
Julian didn’t bother listening to the rest. He stood up, shot a quick look at the police officer nearby, and said, “Do whatever you need to with her.”
He walked away without another word.
He already had the whole picture. Not a single thing they said was true. Julian didn’t care to hear more lies.
The Monroe family’s faces dropped the second he spoke.
Raine lunged at Helene, grabbing her hand tight and hissing under her breath, “You have to help me. This was your idea. If I go down, I’m taking you with me.”
Helene jerked her hand free, her face ice cold. “I heard you,” she replied, her voice flat.
She hurried after Julian.
She caught up to him, slipping back into that sweet, gentle tone she always used when she wanted something. “Julian…”
This time, he actually stopped and waited, which made her heart leap. Maybe he wasn’t suspicious, maybe he wasn’t even mad. “Julian, can we talk for a second?”
“Go ahead.”
Helene took a careful breath. “I know Raine messed up, but at least nothing terrible happened. She’s my friend. Could you let it go, just this once, for my sake?”
“You’re asking me to forgive her?” Julian’s voice was icy.
“Yes. She’s my best friend. I’m really angry about what she did, but she’s already been punished enough.” Helene’s voice softened as she pressed her lips together, looking up at him hopefully.
Julian’s eyes flashed cold, and he stared at her for a moment.
Helene’s heart pounded in her chest.
“All right. Since you’re asking, I’ll let it go.”
“Really?” Helene’s eyes widened in surprise. “Thank you, Julian.”
It was the only good thing that had happened to her all night, and for a second, relief washed over her. Julian had let Raine off the hook because of her. That had to mean she still mattered to him.
