Two Times the Charm (Clara and Emmett) novel Chapter 477

"So, I guess you've heard about my ex-wife and Elio, huh?" The term 'ex-wife' hung awkwardly in the air as Emmett eyed Leah, the name causing a brief flicker of surprise to cross her face.

"Yeah, I've heard... Your mother, Sophia, she's told me quite a bit," Leah admitted, her voice trailing off uncertainly.

Emmett leaned back in his chair, his tone casual as he continued, "Well, since you're in the loop, I'll skip the details. So, you want to become part of the Melendez family..."

Before he could finish, Leah cut in, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Look, Emmett, I swear, the connection between Elio and I is just a title, nothing more. We barely talk to each other! I’m clueless about whatever he's got going on and his relationship with Clara!"

Emmett's gaze lingered on her for a moment before he cracked a smile. "Why the hurry to clear your name? I mean, wanting to marry into the Melendez family... That's bound to stir the pot, don't you think? Gossip hounds aren't interested in the truth. They just want a juicy story, something to snag the public's attention."

"I'm not afraid of that. All I want is to be with the kids," Leah confessed, her hands clenched tightly in her lap, betraying her anxiety.

She had always looked for opportunities to get close to Emmett, but he had maintained a cool distance, never giving her a chance.

Now that the opportunity had presented itself, she felt inexplicably inadequate—as if all her schemes and ploys were transparent before him.

"So you've been approaching the Melendez family just for the kids," Emmett mused, a knowing look in his eyes. “That I can understand.”

Leah quickly responded, "Thank God. I was worried you might overthink things. But don't worry! If you don't want to marry me, that's fine. I have no demands. Just let me be with the children."

Emmett said nothing, just a slight curve of his lips and a soft chuckle.

The silence in the hospital room was suffocating, Leah's nerves stretched to breaking point.

Then, out of the blue, Emmett's voice rose slightly, "By the way, that night... the night we have the twins, were you wearing... a particular perfume?"
