In reality, Amara was terrified. If it weren't winter and she wasn't wearing so many layers, the man would have seen the goosebumps covering her skin.
“It’s just a kidnapping. Why should I be scared? It’s not like you’re going to kill me.”
Her tone was casual, nonchalant enough to avoid sounding like a challenge.
But even as she feigned calmness, her heart was hammering against her ribs.
The man snorted. “Why wouldn’t we kill you? You have a lot of confidence in yourself.”
His words sent a chill down her spine. What did he mean? Were they actually planning to kill her?
She didn't know if he was just trying to scare her, but the fear was real. She forced herself to stay calm. “Murder is illegal. You wouldn’t dare. You’re just bluffing.”
The man seemed to see through her attempt to test him. He just sneered and didn't answer.
He was just a hired hand; he didn't know the specifics. But he recognized her face. This was Amara, Mr. Everly’s ex-wife.
Considering the relationship between Amara, Finnian, and his employer, he guessed this was more than just a simple grudge. After all, she and Mr. Everly were already divorced. There would be no need for all this.
It was more likely that there was still something between Amara and Mr. Everly, something that was standing in the way of his next marriage. And his employer wanted her gone.
So, whether this girl would live or die was anyone’s guess. For a moment, the man’s gaze softened with a hint of pity.
Amara didn’t know what he was thinking, but she saw the shift in his eyes.
His words did nothing to quell her fear. In fact, they only made her more anxious.
She didn't speak to him again, her mind working furiously as she assessed her situation.
An idea began to form, but its success depended on her surroundings.
The problem was, she had been brought to the factory unconscious. She had no idea what the area outside looked like, no way of knowing if her plan would even work.
But she had to try something. Not trying was a guaranteed failure. She looked up. “Hey, can you take me to a bathroom? I really have to go. I promise I won’t run.”
The man's brow furrowed.
