Under the Veil I Rule (Amara) novel Chapter 557

Edith had a feeling what her son was going to say before he even opened his mouth, but hearing the words aloud, rage still flooded her chest.

She shot to her feet, her voice sharp. "Absolutely not! I can overlook the fact that she's divorced, but can't you see she's still entangled with her ex-husband? I will never allow a woman like that to marry into the West family!"

Edith and Nathan had a strong marriage, largely because their values were so aligned. Her words essentially represented Nathan's opinion as well, so he remained silent.

Keith had expected his mother's opposition. It reminded him of the arguments they'd had years ago when his parents tried to force him to study economics, and of the screaming matches when he insisted on entering the entertainment industry a few years after that.

He was only in his twenties, but it felt like he'd rarely had a peaceful day with his parents. It was utterly exhausting.

But he had to see this through. "I love Amara," he said. "And I have for many years."

"You were busy with the business and didn't pay much attention to me when I was a kid, but you must remember I was very close with the little girl next door. If you ask around, you'll find out that little girl was Amara."

"We were close as children, and I've loved her ever since. Forcing me to give her up is simply not an option."

Keith's tone was resolute, leaving no room for negotiation. Edith was infuriated.

"What is there to like about her? The fact that she's still mixed up with her ex-husband?"

"She's attractive and successful, yes, but look at her career! It's in entertainment, just like yours—fickle and unstable. She has no interest in the family business."

"One of you is enough of a headache. If you bring another rebel into the family, how do you expect to manage?"
