Elizabeth asked, “Mother, have you seen the news? Anneliese’s been trending for days–and it’s not good.”
Penelope didn’t even bother to look up from her plant. She let out a soft laugh instead. “Of course I’ve seen it. My granddaughter- in–law’s all over the internet–how could I miss it?”
She actually sounded proud. She’d even gone online herself, liking comments that called Anneliese beautiful, capable, and full of potential.
Elizabeth’s face stiffened. “Mother, this isn’t something to brag about. She faked her research and pushed Coral Slenderidge into getting an abortion. It’s all over the place–it’s a disaster!”
“Enough.” Penelope’s tone snapped through the air like a whip. “Do you really think I don’t know how to read the news? That’s all fake lies and cheap gossip. Anne’s already cleared everything up. Try keeping up before you start talking nonsense.”
Elizabeth clenched her jaw, struggling to stay calm. “Then tell me, do you actually know who she really is?”
Penelope gave her a long, unimpressed look. “Of course I do. She’s my granddaughter–in–law–Jojo’s choice, and I trust his judgment more than yours.”
Elizabeth leaned forward, her voice trembling slightly. “She’s the daughter of that firefighter, Mother–the one who died in the Baytree fire. How can you just sit there and pretend that’s fine?”
Penelope’s expression didn’t change, but her gaze sharpened. “So what? Why shouldn’t it be fine? You really think I’m as blind as you are? You barely raised Jonathan, and now you want to control his life? Don’t make me laugh.”
Elizabeth blinked, caught off guard. “You knew?”
Her calm was shattered. Mother, that girl despised Jonathan when she was a child! She almost bit him! She blamed our family for her father’s death. She doesn’t truly love him. What if she’s using him to seek revenge and tear this family from the inside?”
A sudden crash interrupted her.
Penelope had thrown her porcelain vase against the floor, shards scattering across the tiles.
“Shut your mouth!” she barked, her voice trembling with fury.
Elizabeth jumped back, startled. “Mother, I’m just worried about Jonathan-”
Penelope scoffed. “Worried about Jojo? Please. You’re worried about yourself.”
Elizabeth frowned, her voice shaking. “What are you talking about?”
Penelope gave her a hard, knowing stare. “You’re terrified that once Jojo’s reminded of that night, he’ll remember what really happened–that you saved yourself and left him behind. You’re scared that when Anne learns the truth about that fire, she’ll see you for what you did. That Jojo will finally cut you off for good.”
Penelope’s patience wore thin. She rubbed her temple, exhaling slowly. She regretted, not for the first time, ever letting Elizabeth into this family.
Elizabeth’s throat tightened. “That’s not true. Jonathan’s my only child. I know I wasn’t perfect, but my marriage was miserable- didn’t have a choice. All I desire now is for him to find happiness. I just worry some woman might hurt him again. Is that really so

wrong?
“Mother, you can’t seriously think this marriage will last. He only married Anneliese because he felt guilty. Do you really think she cares about him? They-”
Penelope sharply raised her hand and interrupted, “Enough. Jojo and Anne are completely different from you. They truly understand love and don’t use it as a weapon or bargaining chip.”
She rose to her feet, her tone icy and conclusive. “Stay away from their marriage. If I know you’ve caused any harm to them, you can gather your belongings and leave this family forever.”
Without another glance, she called out to the butler.
The butler stepped into the room almost immediately.
“Show Mrs. Fullbuster out,” Penelope ordered.
Elizabeth’s stomach sank. She had come here hoping Penelope would side with her–that she’d help her talk sense into Jonathan. After all, Penelope was the only person he truly respected.
Yet, the old lady had known everything already, and she still chose Anneliese.
Elizabeth tried to speak again, but the butler was already at her side, gesturing politely toward the door.
