“Yes, yes, of course–science. When we built this kindergarten, we had no idea it was next to an old psychiatric hospital. We thought we’d struck gold. We rushed construction, poured money into it… but no children came. Only later did we learn the truth.”

She sighed heavily.

“But the school was already built. Too much money had gone in to abandon it. So we offered discounts, recruited kids from the outskirts and other towns, and kept our mouths shut about the hospital. Little by little, it grew.”

Her gaze shifted to the sealed–off path, her expression shadowed.

“People said they heard noises at night–crying, like someone weeping. But when we sent people during the day, there were no signs. We thought the guards were making things up. Until one day, one of them was found dead in his booth. We reported it, but there’s never been a clue.”

The words, combined with the footage of Susie’s hypnosis, darkened Baron’s eyes.

“Could there still be a survivor?”

“That’s impossible! The number of bodies matched the registry exactly,” the principal protested.

But the idea made her shudder from head to toe.

If there really had been survivors, how could the kindergarten keep running?

Baron wasn’t so ready to dismiss it.

“Numbers may have matched, but who’s to say all those bodies were patients? What if normal people died in the fire, and a patient lived–now running loose, doing harm?”
